As I look around my office there are many roads into an IT career. Being in tech for more than 35 years and having 2 daughters in technical careers I can say the people that are the most successful in this industry have 3 basic qualities:
1. Love for Technology (Geeks love to Geek)
2. Desire & Ability to Learn (The industry changes so fast that you need to have the desire and propensity to constantly learn)
3. Flexibility (The technology landscape constantly changes ability to roll with it is important)
As far as resources, YouTube, many internet sites geared towards technology you gravitate to and play with tech when you can. I remember building and programming robots with my kids, working on different school and non school projects to see what we could and couldn't do.
For myself I can say the thing that helped me the most when I was younger was a great ability and willingness to break things. Early in the PC Age there was no Apple bar, YouTube, etc. I learned a lot from books, magazines and breaking things and not having the money to pay someone to fix it :)
Final piece of advice: be willing to fail! If you never make a mistake you learn very little. Whether it is how to rewire a motherboard, troubleshoot code, fix a an OS that has blown up, etc. you learn more from the troubleshooting and digging into the problems then you do when everything goes right.
