How can I apply to an internship at an architecture firm in Los Angeles?

I am a Hispanic, 17 year old girl that is really interested in all things that involve art, design, and creativity. I attend a program that is called Minds Matter LA every Saturday of my high school career since sophomore year. We had the opportunity of attending a summer program anywhere in the United States. I attended The University of the Arts Philadelphia. I studied graphic design, woodwork, drawing, and painting. This inspired me to strive for a career that involved drawing and creating. This year, I plan to attend Carnegie Mellon for architecture, but I don't think the summer program is enough. I am really determined to look for an internship. However, I don't know where to start. #design #architect #internship #creative #intern #architectural-design

Hi Ashley!
First of all, huge congrats on committing to your education so fiercely. You clearly have a passion for creativity and design, and that kind of drive will take you far. I really encourage you to hold onto that energy as you keep pushing forward.

Getting real-world experience like an internship is a great goal; it can give you a leg up and help you explore what paths actually call to you. But also remember: university is a place to learn. Nobody expects you to show up already knowing everything. You’re allowed to start from where you are now.

That being said, a good starting point is to look at local artists or creatives whose work you admire. Think of a storefront design that caught your eye, a pop-up event you liked, someone selling their art at a farmers market, or a recent art school grad. Look them up on IG, LinkedIn, or their website. Don’t be afraid to reach out. Most people are open to quick questions like, “How did you get started?” or “Did you do any internships while you were learning your craft?”

The biggest win for you will be networking. Networking doesn't have to be a big scary thing where you knock on doors and ask people for their time, it really just means using your resources, being curious about people's journeys, connecting with your community, and letting it be known that you have a goal you want to reach. Honestly, so many people will be happy to help any way they can. All of us in creative roles were artistic 17 year olds once!
One thing I will say about internships is don't overlook the big players. Companies like Apple, Meta, Pixar, Nike, etc., have huge internship programs and even bigger art departments so your best bet (while getting your name out there) is to find a company where you see creative work being done. While bigger companies may not be where you want to end up, you can learn a whole lot while you're there and supplement your education with these experiences.

On a personal note, college can be hectic and it make take awhile to get your bearings so I encourage you to return to your center: art. Keep making your own work. Keep creating whenever you can. Your center will hold, no matter how nutty the rest of your life gets.

Good luck and I know you'll crush it!
