Is getting a sociology degree worth it?

I'm a high school senior interested in sociology, but I have heard that it won't set me up well for my future career, or that it's a "useless" degree. I value community engagement, and I enjoy studying how different communities interact with each other, human development and psychology, and I love writing. It sounds like a major that would fit my interests, but is it really a waste of time?

There are plenty of great routes you could take from a sociology degree, including working at a nonprofit or in community-engaged work. Based on your interest in how communities interact and writing, it sounds like studying sociology could be a good launching point if you are interested in graduate school (law school, master's in social work, PhD in sociology or psychology). However, if you are not as sold on graduate school, you can also consider paths that blend your interests in psychology, writing, and communities -- from journalism to UX research or content writing, which use many of these same skills!

A sociology degree can be especially useful for building research, writing, critical thinking, and data analysis skills.
What I'd recommend is to brainstorm where you'd like this degree to take you (ask yourself: do any of the above routes sound interesting?) and then, use your time in school to explore those routes however you can. Try to gain practical experience through internships, volunteer work, or research assistantships early on!
