What are the challenges of being a teacher?

I am a sophomore in high school and am interested in pursuing a job in teaching once I graduate. I plan on being an English teacher or an extra curricular teacher for things such as art or theatre.

Melody’s Answer

Hi Madeline,

Teaching is a journey filled with diverse and exciting challenges, shaped by your unique strengths and the focus of your career. Understanding yourself is key—knowing who you are will guide you through any hurdles you may encounter. What one person sees as difficult, you might find inspiring and manageable. Consider the type of school you want to work in, whether it's public, private, charter, or parochial, and think about the location—urban, suburban, rural, or even virtual. Each setting offers its own exciting opportunities and challenges, from class sizes to the level of support you receive.

Before you begin your job search, take some time to reflect on what you truly enjoy and where your talents lie. Consider your personality, values, and what drives you. Think about the subjects and activities you're passionate about and the types of learners you want to inspire. This self-awareness will empower you to thrive in any teaching environment. As you embark on this rewarding career path, I wish you all the success and fulfillment in your future endeavors.

Hello Madelin,

Melody's answer is fantastic! As a teacher, she offers thoughtful and encouraging advice. It's wonderful that you already have a sense of direction at such a young age. Not many young people today know what they want to do, so your maturity and focus are really impressive.

As you take courses to become an English teacher, you might discover other interests along the way. Remember, the world is full of possibilities! I often tell young people to consider a teaching degree because it usually leads to job opportunities.

When I was young, I saw many college graduates struggle to find work in their fields. This made me think about becoming a teacher. However, during my first two years, my interests shifted to other areas like dentistry, veterinary medicine, law, and finally chiropractic. After thorough research, I chose chiropractic and have enjoyed a fulfilling 45-year career helping people. Interestingly, "Dr." means "teacher" in Latin!

So, study hard, get good grades, and most importantly, have fun with what you choose. You'll be doing it for a long time. Best of luck!
