I’m a 12th grade student and I’m really nervous about college. My family is low income and we can’t afford big loans. What should I do?

Hi Jacqueline,

I understand being nervous about student debt. It's good that you're thinking about these things before you go to college. One option is to consider online colleges that are less expensive. If you are interested in business, health science, or computer science, you might want to try a degree at University of the People. I study there myself, and it's an excellent choice for people who want access to education without facing student debt issues. I've heard that in the future, University of the People will also offer a General Studies degree, so that can be a great option if you want to explore a lot of different subjects!

Keep looking for colleges that are affordable and within your family's budget. You don't have to give up your educational dreams! There are many options for cheaper education now, and you don't have to always take out student loans. If you live in a country that supports education, you may also get scholarship offers or grants. Grants are money that you are given specifically for your education, and scholarships can pay for some or even all of your college tuition. You can discuss these options with your parents if they're concerned about student debt.

I wish you all the best in your journey!

Destiny recommends the following next steps:

Check out University of the People at its official website, and share it as an option with your family.
Find other low-cost colleges, and be open to scholarships, grants, or other opportunities. You can discuss these options with your parents and family.

Hi ,

I would suggest applying to scholarships, grants, FAFSA, etc. I would also suggest maybe taking on a partime job or internships to help you build your resume as well as help you with college tuition, etc. Even a job on campus would be beneficial.

If you want to start college without spending a lot of money, consider applying for grants and scholarships. Look into community colleges for better value. Some employers also offer tuition reimbursement, which can help with costs.
