Rita’s Answer

I was a molecular biology major. It did help a little in medical school but not a lot. I think the majority of people in medicine are science majors. My friend's daughter was accepted to medical school and she was a psychology major. She failed one of the science exams because everyone was a science major. I think the average test score for that exam was 89%. This is honestly only the first few months of medical school so it doesn't really matter. A science major will probably help you when you take the MCAT.

I think so many people major in science going into medicine that you may not stand out as much. If you do pursue a science major, maybe do something that stands out in your extracurricular activities. My cousin is a physician and said that sports really helped him. It forced him to push through.

If anything, do something you enjoy and love. If you do you will excel in that field.

Thomas’s Answer

The primary consideration for one who would choose medical science is, in my opinion, whether to provide direct care or choose support/research services. Could one tolerate being near humans when at their worst, for example, or is one more adept with technical and detail oriented work in a more contextual environment. Your search begins with knowledge of self. Good luck.

The great thing about education and learning is that all of it helps you do more - of just about anything. Biology is certainly a common starting point for physicians, but there is no reason you couldn't go on into just about any career.
An incomplete list of ideas:
respiratory therapy
nurse
pharmacist
zoologist
public health
physical therapy
occupational therapy
radiology technologist
lab scientist
professor/teacher
naturalist (note this is a wonderful hobby, but jobs are hard to come by)
kinesiologist

Kathleen’s Answer

Hello! The medical field is very broad and your degree is a perfect first step toward almost any career in Healthcare or medical research. So, what do you love to do? Healthcare technology is wide open: laboratory, radiology, research, information technology, biomedical research and tech, environmental pursuits, physical therapy, administration, education...where do you see yourself enjoying the work and making a difference? You did not specifically mention physician , or PA, but of course those are options as well as veterinary medicine. Take a personal inventory of your strengths and major interests and go from there. Best wishes to you on your journey !
