What inspired you to pursue a career in sports, and what challenges have you faced as a woman entering this field?

Hi! I'm a high school senior who wishes to study sports management in college. I want to gain advice to work in my dream field, but I am scared of entering a male-dominated field. What advice do you have for a girl wishing to achieve her dreams?

Hi! I'm so excited for you. I studied sports management as a minor at UF, and the classes were a blast. My best friend is a social media manager with the Orlando Magic, and she's shared so much about her five years there. While the sports industry might not pay a lot, many people stay because they're truly passionate about it. So if you are looking for financial stability, working for a team isn't the best way to go. My friend is strong and handles the challenges of a male-dominated field well, and she's lucky to have supportive colleagues.

To succeed, try to get as many internships as possible with local teams. It doesn't matter which field—just get your foot in the door. As an intern, you're not expected to know everything, so there's so much potential for you. Always be confident in yourself and your passions. Don't hesitate to share your thoughts and ideas. If anyone looks down on you, that's their issue, not yours. You're amazing!

Hi Samantha,
That’s a very good question. You already think like someone involved in sports management because you care about sports and understand how the industry works.
Big changes in sports, like new technology, marketing, or diversity efforts, started with people who challenged the old ways. Your passion and ideas can help change the game for the better.
My Love for sports at a very young age endeared me to study sports science. I started loving sports as a young girl, played some types of sports as part of a team. As a woman, I want to change the way things are and create new opportunities for others. Sports is not just about winning; it also involves business, culture, and community. Women see chances to influence sponsorships, fans, and athletes beyond just the game. Although Few women are in leadership position because most top jobs are held by men, making it harder for women to find mentors who look like them. You must brace up because bias and stereotypes are common, some people think women know less about sports or business, which is not true. Networking issues may also be there, but I am glad to connect with reputable women in my field.

If you want to start a career in sports management, here are few points to note:
1. Build skills early: Learn about sports business topics like analytics, contracts, and sponsorships to become knowledgeable and respected.
2. Find mentors: Look for teachers, alumni, or professionals who can help guide you. Mentors can help you succeed faster. My mentor did a great job. She kept pushing me to go out there and succeed.
3. Gain experience: Volunteer, intern, or work with local teams or sports departments to learn more about the field.
4. Value your perspective: Being a woman gives you a unique view. Diversity is important and valued in sports leadership.
5. Be confident: Speak up in classes, meetings, and internships. Your voice is important, and confidence helps you earn respect.

I hope this helps, wish you all the best.
