What is the best way to get internships in college?
I am a female high school senior. I have many career interests in the following fields: international relations, history, English, education, politics, and more. I am a proud and active member of the National Beta Club and the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. I enjoy learning and plan to attend a college in the southeast region.

First, I would prioritize your interests, otherwise it's just a "roll of the dice ". And prioritizing will take some thought that you may not have done up to this point?
Secondly, I would seek the thoughts of others? Individuals in the organizations you are involved in, fellow classmates in the school you are now attending.
And, in my opinion, I think you have a lot of reading to do, ad your interests are extensive and varied.

Start by picking the top three things you want to do and focus on those first. Look into jobs in those areas to see what interests you most. Our company has a "bring your kids to work" day, so maybe you can join someone you know to learn about their daily tasks.
Another idea is to go to job fairs at your school or nearby schools and businesses. That's how I got my first internship, which led to my first job. We often discover new things when we explore our options deeply.
Good luck!

Hello, Madison !
Planning for college is always a very exciting time and it's great that you've come here for advice about college internships !
For college students, Internships are typically given to students in their Junior and Senior years when they have foundational knowledge of their Major Subject and familiarity of the work. Some colleges do internship Placement. Some college programs have a built in experience requirement done on campus at the major department. It all depends on what you're majoring in and what college you would be attending.
Your first step would be to choose a career because that will determine what Major to have in college to prepare you for that specific career. Once you know your career goal and Major for it, you can then look at colleges that have a strong program for your Major. You will need to take an orientation at that college and ask about internship placement. You should get specific information about it directly from the college's representative. Colleges are all different and generalized information is not usually beneficial so contact the school about it once you know where you will attend.
I am not sure what you'd be majoring in, however, instead of an internship, your first two years at college will be filled with lots of reading, writing term papers, doing Lab work, Practicums and doing projects. This will keep you busy. Something that you may like would be the Work Study Program for which you could obtain a job in your Major Department, giving you experience in your field as well as an opportunity to make strong contacts with your professors and the other students. You apply for Work Study on the Federal Student Financial Aid Application and you should speak with the campus financial aid department as soon as you can to obtain details about how it works. You would get paid by the Federal Student Financial Aid program, not the college. You would be able to put in your hours for the job around your class schedule.
So even though you may not qualify for an Internship or get department assigned experience until your Junior and Senior year, you can obtain great experience other ways. There's enough to keep you busy just with your courses. So figure out the career choice, match a Major to the career and look at colleges that have a program for what you need to get your degree in.
I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
