what job would be suitable for a 17 year old? I want to get in to business marketing and advertising.

I like designingin like canva, art, painting and i enjoy social media. I don't know where to start.

Thank you comment icon I second all of the other comments. But I'd like to add if you couldn't get an internship right now for a company, try volunteering! There's lower barriers, you can build your portfolio/credibility and you can do something meaningful for a cause you care about. Samantha

Hey Paris,
Try looking into Graphic Design (Social media focused like marketing, engagement, etc..).
There's lot's of things to do there like Illustrations, Marketing designs, and a whole lot more stuff. Graphic Design is one of the most saturated careers right now, but if you focus on a couple of things, it won't be hard to land a good paying job there or you can go into freelance.

I started my career in Graphic design, when I was 17 aswell. It was hard not gonna lie, but it's a good career path if can get really good at it.

I'd suggest looking into some Startups for an internship and you'll figure something out after that. It will give you an idea of what you'll be doing if you go into a full time job in Graphic Design or an Illustrator.

For marketing/advertising, you could get a job in validation - testing web pages etc. It would pay decent $ and give you direct contact with folks in the roles you would like to be in. I did this for a while, they called it "IT Quality" but it was really web page testing - which basically anyone can do with very minor otj training. The example from my history was working at Razorfish in Austin, testing roll out campaigns on different web formats of phones, tablets, etc to ensure everything was working.

You're in a great spot to explore a marketing career. San Francisco and the Bay Area are known for innovation and creativity, and they're still key places for business and finance. This mix draws many companies to the area. Check with your college advisor or teachers about internships for high school students. There may be opportunities in the summer or during your senior year. Some companies to consider are Goodby Silverstein and Associates and Eleven.

Hi Paris, it's awesome that you've already figured out what you love and what you're good at—that's a big step! Your interest in design, art, and social media is a great fit for marketing and advertising. At 17, you have lots of exciting paths to explore. You could start by checking out entry-level jobs like social media assistant, graphic design intern, or junior marketing coordinator at local businesses, marketing agencies, or nonprofits. Many of these roles focus more on your portfolio than formal qualifications, so it's a good idea to start building yours now. Try creating sample designs on Canva, managing social media accounts for friends or small local businesses, and keeping track of your creative projects. You might also think about studying marketing, graphic design, advertising, or communications in college, or look into shorter certification programs in digital marketing or graphic design to jumpstart your career. Meanwhile, take advantage of free online courses from places like Google Digital Garage, HubSpot Academy, or YouTube to boost your skills. The key is to start creating, try real projects, and build a portfolio that shows what you can do—that's what employers in creative fields really care about. Your mix of design skills, artistic talent, and social media know-how is exactly what businesses need today!
