Olivia’s Answer

Hi Ashton,

To start, I think your options should be based on the type of business you want or already have. Some good options that may help you build real business skills include roles in retail, customer service, sales, or as an office assistant. Since you're in college, internships in areas like marketing, finance, human resources, or management are also very helpful. Even part-time jobs can teach you communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management, all of which are important and needed in business.

Velinda’s Answer

There are certain skills that are important to the business world, a few are 1. Collaboration - Effective collaboration will be essential as remote and hybrid work models become more common. Tools and practices that facilitate communication and teamwork will be important. Being able to listen to others ideas and understand how they may add value to your ideas. This takes time and practice - to really appreciate others opinions and state yours to come up with a joint idea/solution.
2 Leadership-Leadership skills will be crucial at all levels of an organization. Developing leadership programs and mentoring can help cultivate these skills. When you are working and see someone that displays the business character you aspire to - ask them to mentor you 3. Customer Service- Excellent customer service skills will be vital as customer expectations continue to rise. Training in communication and problem-solving can enhance these skills. Good Luck!!!

Bob’s Answer

There are many ways to learn business basics. Internships can be helpful if you get good mentorship to understand how a business operates. However, in larger companies, these mentorships are often hard to find. Consider working in a small business instead.

During college, I worked at a small business over the summer. The owner spent a lot of time mentoring me, which helped me learn how the business ran. This was because not many young people were interested in the mortuary business.

You could look for a summer job with other college students. Many students work together under a franchise owner to paint houses. This allows you to learn a skill and understand business operations with the franchise mentor's help. In future summers, you could select college students to mentor while running your own house painting business.

Caoimhe’s Answer

Hi Ashton, exploring a part-time role or unpaid internship is a fantastic way to gain valuable experience in the professional world. It's a great chance to discover the areas that interest you most. Since you'll be busy with college, think about how much time you can commit and which industry excites you. I highly recommend using LinkedIn to connect with people. Volunteering for a project there can open many doors and might even lead to a summer job. Wishing you all the best!
