I am from grade 9th and I'm from Pakistan. I like both computer science and biology but I genuinely want to choose computer science as my field but due to the lack of guidance I am afraid of am I making the right decision. I want to understand the difference between computer science and biology and there advantages and what career opportunities will computer science give to me and what career opportunities will biology provide. I need help to the right career. ?

My most liked subjects are computer science and biology but now I am choosing one subject as my field. I should choose computer science but I want guidance.

Thank you comment icon Thank you everyone for your guidance and support but I am not that much interested in bio then CS as the up coming time will be based on Artificial intelligence. I think CS is the best choice for now but I am confused to do matric or Cambridge (O/A levels) as I am being promoted from class 8th to 9th. ibrahim

Rafael’s Answer

Hey Ibrahim! Computer science can open doors to careers like software development, data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, web development, and cloud computing, with opportunities available worldwide. Biology is also a great field, leading to paths in medicine, research, pharmacy, genetics, and environmental science, but many of these require extensive and costly education and can be challenging to enter depending on your location. From my experience, starting with a technical foundation and adding skills in data science, analytics, and business has provided a lot of flexibility. Computer science also allows you to combine it with biology later through areas like bioinformatics or health tech. CS roles often offer strong starting salaries, remote work options, and a wide variety of industries. If you’re leaning toward computer science, it’s a smart choice, and you can always keep biology as an interest or merge the two in the future.

Nicholas’s Answer

Hey Ibrahim,

Here's some info to hopefully help!

Career Opportunities:
In Computer Science: Software Engineering, AI/Data Science, Cybersecurity, and Freelancing.
The Big Plus: You can start earning in USD early through freelancing, and the "path to entry" is faster than medicine.

In Biology: MBBS (Doctor), BDS (Dentist), Pharmacy, or Biotechnology.
The Big Plus: High job security and social prestige, but it requires much longer study years and intense competition for medical seats.

Choose CS if: You enjoy Math, love "figuring things out," and want a career that allows for remote work and rapid growth.

Choose Bio if: You have a passion for healthcare, don't mind heavy memorization, and are prepared for a 7–10 year journey to become a specialist.

The "Middle Ground"
If you love both, look into Bioinformatics later on. It uses CS to solve biological problems (like DNA sequencing).

Final Advice: If you genuinely want to choose CS, don't let a lack of guidance scare you. The IT industry in Pakistan is booming, and there are more resources online (YouTube, Coursera, etc.) for CS than almost any other field. Follow your interest—that’s where you’ll work the hardest and be the most successful!

LaTausha’s Answer

I agree with the previous answer. Computer science is the better option. Computer Science is a working degree meaning you'll graduate with numerous well paying job opportunities. Biology is more of a foundational degree which will require a master or other advance degree to thrive in the field.

David’s Answer

Choosing Computer Science (CS) in Pakistan offers a fast-paced career path with massive global potential, especially if you enjoy logic and problem-solving. While Biology is the gateway to respected medical professions like MBBS or Biotechnology, it often requires a longer, more expensive academic journey and has incredibly high competition for limited seats. In contrast, CS allows you to start working as a software engineer, web developer, or data scientist right after a four-year degree—or even earlier through freelancing. The tech industry in Pakistan is booming, and choosing CS gives you the flexibility to work for international companies from home, which is a major advantage in today's economy.
If you genuinely prefer computers over memorizing biological systems, you are likely making the right decision by following your interest. Biology is a wonderful field for those passionate about healthcare, but it can be frustrating if your heart isn't in it, especially given the intense study load. By choosing Computer Science, you open doors to careers in Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, and Game Development, all of which offer high salaries and the chance to innovate. Trusting your instinct in 9th grade will lead to a more fulfilling career because you'll be studying something you actually enjoy rather than struggling with a subject just because of tradition.

Harsha Priya’s Answer

Hi Ibrahim,

I'm Harsha Priya Ganapathy, and I work in Computer Science, focusing on AI and machine learning. I also mentor students around the world. It's fantastic that you're thinking about your future so early!

Let's break it down simply:

Computer Science vs. Biology

Computer Science:
- You learn programming, AI, apps, and how technology works.
- You get to build things like apps, AI systems, and games.

Biology:
- You learn about the human body, medicine, and living organisms.
- You study living systems, leading to careers like doctor or researcher.

Career Opportunities:

In Computer Science:
- Software Engineer, AI/Machine Learning Engineer, Cybersecurity Specialist, Data Scientist, Game Developer.
- High demand globally, with opportunities in the USA, Europe, and remote work.

In Biology:
- Doctor, Pharmacist, Biotechnologist, Medical Researcher.
- More years of study, usually 5-10 years.

Based on what you said:
- You like Computer Science more than Biology.
- You believe the future is in AI.

My advice:
Choose Computer Science if you enjoy technology, problem-solving, and are curious about AI, apps, or software. Don't choose Biology unless you're truly passionate about becoming a doctor or working in healthcare.

From my experience:
Success comes from choosing what you genuinely enjoy, not just following trends.

Matric vs. Cambridge (O/A Levels):
If possible, choose Cambridge for better international opportunities and a strong foundation in Computer Science and Math. But Matric is also a good option if Cambridge isn't affordable.

Final advice:
You're not locking your life path now; you're just picking a starting point. You can always combine interests later, like Bioinformatics or Health AI.

Remember: Choose what excites you, not what scares you.

Yang’s Answer

Hi ibrahim, don't worry, what you're feeling is totally normal—lots of people stress about picking a major. Me too, I eounter such kind of issue when I entered the university. Since you're leaning toward computer science, just go for it! Computer science and biology are both great, but CS is more about logic and creating stuff—you can build cool software, work on AI (u know very popular right now), or even use tech to help doctors. Biology is awesome too, but it usually means years of studying. And guess what? If you pick CS, you can still work in biology later through bioinformatics, using code to analyze genes. So trust your gut—you’ve got this!

Hagen’s Answer

Hello ibrahim,

I have thought for a long time that computer skills without domain knowledge is a serious limitation. Domain knowledge related to biology seems like a perfect match for computer science- you have something to which you can apply your computer and nowadays AI knowledge.
The other advantage can be that coupling those two together differentiates you in the market. There will be legions of people with computer skills and biology skills alone. Some will be better at that than you are - by choosing one or the other you more or place yourself in a challenging ranking system - that may already be apparent to you in Pakistan.
Mostly, if you love biology AND you love computer science you will care about your work. It will matter to you. You won't just be writing programs for someone else who cares about something else. You won't just be researching biology to make a living. You'll have the opportunity to feel the problem and the urgency to solve it. That's a much better way to live and it will drive you to be more successful.

Hagen recommends the following next steps:

Think about what interests you about both careers
Think about the problems you'd want to work on and solve - what would be exciting about those careers?
Think about a day in the life as a biologist and a computer engineer. Are you going to enjoy that day? What would make it more enjoyable?
