Yes, of course there are tons of jobs that combine computer hardware and software engineering. There are high-visibility jobs in self driving cars right now.

And, the so-called Internet of Things is huge. There are jobs designing telephone equipment, appliance control systems, thermostats, traffic lights, retail equipment, medical instruments, etc. Look around. Pretty much the only "thing" out there without computer hardware or software in it these days is a hammer. And even the hammer may have a RFID chip in it.

Job titles are "Embedded systems design engineer," "Firmware engineer," "Systems reliability engineer," "control systems engineer," and so forth. Good jobs may feature the word "system" in their titles. That's because a "system" means something that integrates more than one engineering discipline.

If your hometown is San Jose CA USA, you live in a great center of innovation in this field. If you do a little internet research or make some phone calls, and you'll find interesting meetups of people doing this sort of stuff. You'll also find resources at local high schools and colleges. Don't hesitate to show up and ask questions: that's how most of us got started. Go for it!

Rudy’s Answer

Hi Jesus
I encourage you to learn more about Systems Engineering - this combines SW, HW and other disciplines.

As a systems engineer, you would be leveraging engineering knowledge and skills across different areas to collect requirements, create proof of concepts, architect solutions, and much more.

Systems engineers can go very deep in a subject or very broadly across the entire product/system. It is actually very exciting as you would get to be involved in understanding what the customer wants and translating it to engineering specifications to actually building the system.

I put a link below where you can learn more
