Andrew’s Answer

My training is in physics (BS in physics, MS in physics, and Ph.D. in geophysics), and I spent two decades work at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center working in the area of geodynamics, space-borne geophysics, space geodesy, and effect of global climate on geodynamic parameters based on large scale statistical analysis.

In any case, since there are a wide range of scientific research performed in a space agency like NASA, scientists from many areas should find gainful employment there. During my two-decade at NASA/GSFC, I had worked with physicists, atmospheric chemists, atmospheric scientists, oceanographers, computer scientists, and software engineers.

Thank you comment icon Hi Rich, these are great resources for finding opportunities in the field but they don't necessarily answer the student's question. They wanted to know what it's like to work for a space agency. Any insight you can provide would be helpful! Gurpreet Lally, Admin
Thank you comment icon Great feedback. I also read, “What kind of work do you do at a space agency”; and I wish when I was younger, I could see the myriad of types of work (jobs) that NASA employees can do, with outlines of different type of engineering roles that help the facility, offering details on what each role’s responsibilities includes. For example, Senior Technologist, Aeropropulsion, serves as a senior technical expert at supporting research and development across a broad range of programs and projects for Agency; provide technical and thought leadership of the Center's aeropropulsion technical activities in research and development, design, test, and evaluation of advanced, complex aeropropulsion systems. Thanks for contributing Rich Wawrzynski
