If I want to become a Cybersecurity Analyst, what should I get my bachelors in?

(Asking for my brother) Should I get my bachelors in computer information sciences, IT, or computer science? I was also considering my bachelors with an undergraduate cybersecurity certificate? Will I get a job if I have this combo?

Xavier’s Answer

I would persue a Bachelors on Computer Science and ask to take classes on cyber security. Search out STEM focused Colleges in your area.

Atul’s Answer

Having worked in this industry for 10 years, and if you are good in Math and have good analytical skills, get a degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering (hardware involved) since Machine Learning is a way of life nowadays and many companies are putting this in hardware.
I am not suggesting an MIS degree which many assume is the same as Computer Science, it is NOT.
After acquiring BS in Computer Sc or Eng degree, you can take courses to get a certificate or pass the exam to be a Certified/Ethical Hacker.

Great question. Cybersecurity is a very fast growing career. My recommendation would be to focus in a degree in: Information Systems, Information Security, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Data Analytics, and Business IT.

Kris’s Answer

Cybersecurity is an interesting field. It's a relatively new area and many people who started out in the field about 10 or 20 years ago came from varying backgrounds. I've met a few folks who were history majors and have been fantastic cybersecurity professionals. That being said, a somewhat technical background (STEM) may be helpful and can help introduce and better understand the concepts needed to understand the technical body of knowledge of cybersecurity. However, a business or economics background can be very helpful for cybersecurity leadership and risk management positions while a law degree may be helpful in cybersecurity compliance. I believe cybersecurity is a field that offers a wide variety of opportunities and you can really start anywhere.

Fred’s Answer

if your brother wants to work in cyber security, why not get a degree in...well...cyber security?
Thank you comment icon Fred, my brother is considering degrees other than cybersecurity for flexibility reasons. He was just curious as to what degrees other than cybersecurity would be a good stepping stone towards that field of industry. Genevieve
