Do I have to take both Art&Design and DT for GCSEs to be an interior designer?

I am picking my gcses this month and I still don’t know what I want to be for sure but I know that I definitely want to be in the art field (either being an interior designer, architect, graphic designer or an actress). I have already decided that I’m doing history, Spanish, drama and now I need to decide for my last section, whether I’m going to do Art&Design, DT or Latin.

Hi Mia. I highly recommend taking both GCSEs in order to become an interior designer. Most positions require some type of educational background in the subject area that you would like to pursue. The more qualifications that you can accrue for a particular career, the better. Furthermore, I would recommend freelancing some work on the side in order to build work experience to cover all angles. Companies looking for interior designers have a strong desire to see your portfolio in order to demonstrate your capabilities.

Based on the fields that you said you have interest in, I would definitely recommend taking an Art & Design class. This will give you a good idea if you want to pursue further.

Hi Mia…as above really…you will find both GCSE’s useful. If your options only allow art or DT, then choose the one you feel you can achieve the highest grade in. I would also approach your DT teachers and ask them what you will cover at GCSE. This might help you decide which route to take. When I completed my interior design degree, the technical design elements were taught at university, but the artistic side was something that you had to already have. Maybe research universities that you would consider and find out what their requirements are? What A levels will you require? Some universities ask for a foundation level in art. Foundation is great as it covers most aspects of art and design in some way. Perhaps speak to your school careers advisor to help you with this. I would also start thinking about your work experience placement if you’ve not done it already? Are there any local architects or design companies you could approach for a placement. Again this is something your school should be able to help you with. Hope this helps and good luck ☺️
