Ellen’s Answer

Hi Ellie
Yes, you can. A masters degree subject can be something different from your undergraduate degree, but you will need to pay attention to the requirements of the masters program you are looking at. As another responder pointed out, usually for admittance into a masters program for graphic design or art, you will need a portfolio of artwork that demonstrates your skills and ideas. This means you might have to take some extra design or art classes before applying to build up your portfolio.

BTW, a combination of a communications undergraduate degree in media management and a graphic design masters degree sounds like a great combination!

Best wishes.

Erica’s Answer

Hi, Ellie!

A creative Master's is definitely possible. Most MFA and Master of Graphic Design programs will accept students with non-graphic design undergraduate degrees. However, these graduate programs will require a portfolio of design work when you apply. If you do not take a lot of classes as an undergraduate that require you to create pieces, you will have to do more work outside of school to build your portfolio. This does not mean you should change your plans for a major and minor--I just want you to be aware.

You may find it helpful to search for some MFA or Master's programs you might be interested in and read their application instructions. The instructions will tell you what you need to apply.

I hope this helps!
