I think Luke has provided a very good answer for your question, there isn't much to add. They're both excellent schools. UCSD offers different residential college than other of traditional model (like revelle/john muir...) I would recommend you visit both of them and see what you preferred. we did that (drove down from nor cal) and my children decided on UCSD because they like the campus.

Luke’s Answer

UC Irvine and UC San Diego are both excellent schools with strong engineering programs. However, there are some key differences between the two schools that may make one a better fit for you than the other.

UC Irvine

Pros:
More affordable than UC San Diego
Smaller campus with a more intimate feel
Located in a beautiful suburban area
Strong academic reputation
Diverse student body
Cons:
Not as well-known as UC San Diego
Not as many research opportunities
Not as much to do off-campus
UC San Diego

Pros:
More well-known than UC Irvine
More research opportunities
More to do off-campus
Located in a vibrant urban area
Strong academic reputation
Diverse student body
Cons:
More expensive than UC Irvine
Larger campus with a more impersonal feel
Not as much green space
Ultimately, the best school for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If you are looking for a more affordable school with a smaller campus and a more intimate feel, then UC Irvine may be a better fit for you. If you are looking for a school with more research opportunities and more to do off-campus, then UC San Diego may be a better fit for you.

Here are some additional things to consider when making your decision:

Cost: UC Irvine is more affordable than UC San Diego. If cost is a major factor in your decision, then UC Irvine may be a better fit for you.
Location: UC Irvine is located in a beautiful suburban area, while UC San Diego is located in a vibrant urban area. If you have a preference for one type of location over the other, then that may be a factor in your decision.
Academics: Both UC Irvine and UC San Diego have strong engineering programs. However, UC San Diego may have more research opportunities. If research is important to you, then UC San Diego may be a better fit for you.
Student life: Both UC Irvine and UC San Diego have active student lives. However, UC San Diego may have more to do off-campus. If you are looking for a school with a lot to do off-campus, then UC San Diego may be a better fit for you.
Fit: Ultimately, the best school for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. It is important to visit both schools and get a feel for the campus and the student body before making a decision.

1 might add that UC San Deigo consistently ranks high than UC Irvine in national and international comparisons of universities. Plus UCSD lies less than a mile from several renowned=beaches. What more can I add?
Disclosure: I was an early graduate from UCSD.3
