Are you supposed to create a resume for College Applications?

Are you supposed to create a formal sheet of all your work/ volunteer experiences, extra-curricular, etc and submit alongside your college app.?

Hi Lourdes,

It may not be required to have a resume, but now is the best time to start building your resume. When you start applying for jobs, you will have a great baseline of all the activities and extracurriculars that you have participated in already neatly noted in your resume.

Even if you don't put all of these items into a traditional resume format, I recommend starting a log of activities that you do in your extracurriculars, or in classes that pertain to the career path you're looking to go into. This will help you prepare for interviews in the future. Also, once you start working in your career, you'll be in the habit of journaling/logging all of the value add activities you complete. Keeping a log of these things will aid in having conversations with your future bosses to advocate for yourself for raises and promotions with concrete examples. It's easy to keep track of these things as they happen, then conduct a review periodically, maybe quarterly to identify which items should be added to your resume or highlighted when you start building your elevator speech and networking.

Every college application is slightly different but they all overlap. As you go through the college application, there will sections where you can talk and explain your personal accomplishments such as awards, clubs, GPA, etc. I don't believe you need to create a resume and upload it, but you will have the opportunity to talk about what you have done that sets you apart from others. Remember, colleges want to know why they should accept you.

Most of the time colleges don’t ask for a resume! But I would recommend you to make one just in case and if it is optional it will be a good idea to give them one!

I believe most colleges don't usually ask for a resume. However, I believe that it is beneficial to have one because you can always use it in the future and build off of it as you start your college years. Remember to update your resume periodically with any achievements and opportunities that you are proud of.
