Before seeking out a higher-level role, you need to prove that you’ve mastered your current responsibilities and are already making a positive contribution to your organization. You can establish yourself as a standout employee by hitting (or exceeding) targets, meeting deadlines and delivering high-quality work in every task assigned to you. There’s no better sign of a future leader than someone who is able to solve the most pressing challenges facing you. Work can be stressful, but how you handle that stress is important. Even if your team falls short on a goal, it’s important that you learn from your loss without letting it drag you down. Staying focused on the next challenge and maintaining a positive attitude can motivate your coworkers to keep pushing forward and rise to the next occasion.

CONSTANTLY IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS
You should constantly learn new skills and stay on top of industry trends. Whether it’s through reading industry blogs, attending seminars or taking online training courses, continuous learning will put you in a position to offer new solutions or introduce new tools that could help your team be more productive or strategic in its practices. The digitalization of the modern economy has opened up a world of learning opportunities for professionals who want to enhance their skills and advance their careers. Online courses are an excellent way to explore new subject areas from anywhere worldwide. Many online learning platforms provide certificates upon completion, so they can be an asset when looking for new job or promotion opportunities. Furthermore, organizations often cover the cost of employees taking online business classes as part of their educational development plan. Such courses benefit you and your employer since your newfound knowledge will immediately be applied in workplace.

KNOW WHEN TO ASK FOR A PROMOTION
Getting a promotion is an exciting opportunity that can add purpose to your role in the workplace. Knowing when to ask for a promotion is essential to ensuring success and advancing your career. The first step is knowing what you must do in your role and what will make you eligible for a higher position. Once you feel comfortable and confident in this plan, there may be times when it makes sense to present your case for a promotion. To ensure your manager isn’t surprised by the request, communicate regularly about your goals and aspirations. It also gives them time to observe your progress so they can provide substantive feedback when the conversation evolves into requesting a promotion. During these check-ins, mention your desire for advancement or express interest in positions open within the company to increase conversations and visibility with these opportunities. Ultimately, suppose you have done the work and are prepared for additional responsibilities. In that case, it is important that you make sure to keep communication channels open and be confident when asking for that next level up.

Bob’s Answer

I recall as a Salesman, that my peers would have breakfast or lunch together during the day. Also, in terrible weather, they would avoid being with customers or potential customers. I, in turn, would be working with potential/actual customers during those hours. First rule is to work harder-better focused than your peers.
Second rule is to work smarter. During the day, focus upon achievement, employing any and all ethical tools to be successful in your work. You can do your paperwork at home in the evening. Be the person others emulate.
Learn to network and have other people work with/for you. Be so great at your job that customers, peers, associates and managers in your firm "sing your praises" for the work that you do. It is the extra assistance you provide in helping others to recognize and solve problems that you will be known for. Rule three, be the "go to guy/gal.
Rule four, think, communicate and act like a manager/executive. Study the best managers and executives around you. How do they think? What questions do they ask? How do they plan and execute within their responsibilities. What are their priorities. How do they measure success? How do they think strategically and tactically? How do they treat subordinates, peers, bosses? Learn and emulate what you want to be as a manager/executive. Become your next promotion.
Once you understand Rule four, be sure to make your boss as successful as possible. He/she will see you as a key to success. As they move upward with promotions, you will be the first priority for them to promote you as well. this is Rule five.
Then, continue to follow these rules in every career position you have. As for me, over time, I moved within multiple high technology businesses-from Salesperson, to Sales manager, to Product manager, to Regional Director, to Vice President, to President, to Chairman of the board.

Bob recommends the following next steps:

Study your industry rivals. Attend industry trade shows. Study the culture of excellence in training, innovation and rewards in various competitors.

Hi TJ,

Great question! Advancing in the world of business is all about growing your skills, your network, and your business. Here is a guide on seizing those opportunities:

Keep Learning: The business world is always changing, so staying curious and continuously learning is key. Use free online courses from platforms like Coursera or Khan Academy to brush up on business, marketing, and tech skills.

Network, Network, Network: Meeting new people can open doors you didn’t even know existed. Join local or online business clubs (like DECA or Future Business Leaders of America), attend community events, or participate in online forums. These connections can offer advice, mentorship, and opportunities.

Embrace Technology: In today’s world, technology can be a game-changer for businesses. Familiarize yourself with digital tools and platforms that can help streamline your operations, from social media for marketing (like Instagram and TikTok) to productivity apps (like Slack) and financial tools (like QuickBooks for budgeting).

Think Creatively: Sometimes, advancing means thinking outside the box. Don’t be afraid to try new ideas or pivot your business direction if you see an opportunity. Innovation attracts attention and can set you apart from the competition.

Seek Feedback and Act on It: Listen to what your customers and mentors say about your business. Their feedback can guide you on what to improve or change, leading to better products, services, and business strategies.

Build a Strong Online Presence: In the digital age, a strong online presence can significantly impact your business’s visibility and growth. Utilize social media platforms and a simple website to showcase your products or services, share your story, and connect with your audience.

Start Small but Dream Big: Every big business started somewhere small. Focus on making your current business operations as smooth and efficient as possible, but always keep an eye on the future. Set long-term goals and brainstorm steps to get there, whether it’s expanding your product line, reaching new markets, or even starting additional ventures.

Stay Resilient: The path to advancement will have its ups and downs. Resilience is about pushing through challenges and learning from setbacks. Remember, every mistake is a learning opportunity.

You've got this. Best of luck to you!
