You will know that you are qualified to be a lawyer when you pass the Bar Exam. That is when you can be a lawyer.
As for the characteristics that go into being a good lawyer, first and foremost would be excellent written, verbal, communication and presentational skills. Someone would have to possess very sharp critical thinking skills, analytical skills, intuition based on experience, be empathetic, a strong belief in constitutional, civil and human rights, knowledge of the branches of government and a good listener. An effective lawyer is also someone who can negotiate, advocate and coalesce with co-workers and clients. Someone who has excellent organizational skills, too.
The specifics about how to become a lawyer start with going to college for a Bachelors Degree. You would want to get your Bachelors Degree in something connected to law, such as Political Science or Government. Read course catalogs from various colleges and see what majors they offer that will give you a good foundation for law. After your Bachelors Degree, you will go to Law School for three years, so it's a seven year college experience.
Some of the Law Schools that you can explore are University of San Diego School of Law, San Diego Law School at North County campus, Thomas Jefferson School of Law, Western Sierra Law School, California Western School of Law all located in San Diego.
