How can I prepare myself for the difficulty and workload of a rigorous out-of-state university when transitioning from a small town high school?

I am a senior in a high school with only a handful of advanced and AP classes available. The university follows the core curriculum and I am interested in majoring in history and criminology.

I understand your situation. It can't be easy moving on to an out of state university.

But you write that the university has a core curriculum, as do most. Such cores are designed to test your interests while providing course that may benefit the student throughout their lives. For me it was two two credit courses: Music Appreciation and Art Appreciation. Who knows what it will be for you.

Regardless, I would not worry about the number of AP courses at your high school. The fact that you gained admittance to the university of your choice, it seems to me, that the institution believes that you are able to do the academic work, and the Core will test that ability.

And keep in mind that thousands upon thousands of students have gone through what you are about to go through and successfully survived.
