How to network successfully in sports photography and sports graphics?

How do network in the field of graphic design and photography? I always feel strange and awkward trying to talk to other designers and photographers because I feel like I am interrupting them. I want to stand out to people and have them think of me for internships and job shadowing, but I am lost in how to do that. But I know the only way to succeed in that field is by creating those relationships to get my dream jobs like taking photos and making graphics for a professional sports team, but how do I do it?

If you're a passionate sports fan, and I bet you are, start reaching out to local sports organizations in your area. Check out LinkedIn and other professional sites to connect with people. Be persistent and think outside the box to catch their eye. Have a strong collection of images ready to wow them, and don't hesitate to show your willingness to work hard and gain experience. Keep pushing yourself, stay inspired, and follow industry leaders who motivate you. Find ways to connect with them, and who knows, you might get your big break.

Many people are trying to do what you are, so figure out what makes you unique and what special skills you can offer.

Look for professional organizations to join where you can meet others organically and volunteer. I've volunteered to work the door, serve food and clean up just to meet folks - it worked really well for meeting the attendees, and it was a contribution to the success of the event at the same time. I still volunteer, it gets me in the door for free and gives me the chance to meet more folks. See what you think ...good luck!

Hey Ainsley, I believe who you know can be helpful, but if you can't produce a product that your client wants...you won't last long.
I would suggest you get a college education with a graphic design, or art, major. You can teach yourself how to use an interchangeable lens camera.
Work for your school newspaper as a photographer. The school you attend may do their own in-house graphics. I think you need to build your self-confidence. Experience and education will be an asset.
You should be aware the gear to shoot sports is very expensive.
You will need a website as a portfolio that shows only your best work.
A last thought. People like to talk about themselves. Just talk to people. Don't approach them expecting anything. You're just interested in what they do. Enjoy the journey. It does take practice.
Best of luck!
