What is the best studying strategy to manage your time, stay focused, and actually retain the information you need?

I am currently a senior in high school, applying for scholarships when I start my freshman year at Walla Walla University in Fall 2026. My goal is to get a bachelor's degree in social work and become a clinical case manager.

I feel 20 minute rule for time management really works well. In this time management technique:

1) First chose the task you want to accomplish
2) Set a timer i.e. keep the end time for this task.
3) Sit in a peaceful place and focus on the task without encountering any distractions. Work with full focus on that task for next 20 minutes.
4) Once you understand that time is over and if the task is not completed, take a 5 minutes break and then repeat this process from step 2 unless task gets completed.

Hi Abigail! I think the best studying strategy is to remove any distractions from your view by not using your phone and being in a quiet environment. Another strategy is to take regular breaks instead of forcing yourself to study for hours. To retain information, I suggest using flashcards to help with memorizing information and writing down your notes.

Start by figuring out the best way for you to learn, whether it's watching educational videos or reading books. Then, plan your daily schedule to include time for study. Make sure you follow this schedule. After learning something new, review it by writing it down and checking your understanding.

Students at MIT have a "saying" regarding how to be successful (or not) at the institution: You can do three things at MIT, study, sleep, party; pick any two.

Thank you for your question. Firstly, you need to find out a time management tool to help, e.g. MS Outlook, Google Calendar, Phone Calendar, etc.
Below are my suggestions :
1. Put down the time to need to attend classes
2. Assign some time every day on the project & assignment, etc. Review the material covered in the call everyday. Ask the tutor if you have anything not clear in next tutorial
3. Make sure you have enough time to sleep and do some exercise.
4. You can allocate some time for your leisure time and have some friends & family gathering, etc.
5. Assign more time for revision before assessment
