I'm seeking to build my network in cybersecurity further. What are some optimal ways to go about accomplishing this?

I recently joined ISACA as a student member and attended my first chapter meeting. I had some great conversations, but didn't necessarily walk away with any new connections. I've attended several virtual webinars over the past couple of months as well, and gained new LinkedIn connections, but nothing in-depth as of yet.

Jeff’s Answer

Hi Dorsey - You ask an excellent question and you make a completely fair point. I have also had the same experience when I attend some of the industry functions. However, I would say to stick with it - keep attending and making an effort to form connections. It may take some time for connections to form and opportunities to appear.

I suggest tuning your expectations and goals a bit. If your ultimate goal, for example, is to obtain a job then keep attending industry functions and (in my experience), it is a matter of time before someone will indicate that their company has openings for which you may be a fit. Also, keep up with your LinkedIn - keep your profile updated, keep adding certifications to your profile and sooner or later you should start to get connections. I hope that helps. Best of luck to you.
Thank you comment icon Hello Jeff V. and thank you for your response. I do like this approach. Be open-minded, keep at it (consistency), and by constantly progressing and staying up-to-date, doors will potentially open! Dorsey

Sumitra’s Answer

Hello Dorsey!
From my experience in this field, I have observed that, building a strong cybersecurity network is more about creating small and meaningful touchpoints than collecting connections . Instead of just attending events, try asking one thoughtful question, sharing a short takeaway on LinkedIn, or following up with speakers or attendees afterward.
Try to engage with people before and after meetups, volunteer with your ISACA chapter, and interact consistently with a small circle of professionals who are at a similar stage as you.
Even posting one simple insight a month helps others recognize you over time. You are already on the right track. Networking in cybersecurity grows slowly, but consistency and visibility turn those early interactions into real relationships.
Hope this helps! ☺️
Thank you comment icon Hello Sumitra! These are wonderful words of advice. I'll definitely focus on building those small, impactful interactions and encourage the flow naturally. Attending my local ISACA chapter events will help immensely, and I look forward to meeting more professionals in the field. Thank you for you response! Dorsey

Lee’s Answer

Meetup.com can be useful here to find cybersecurity relevant events, quick check for NJ and it looks like events locally are well attended.
Thank you comment icon Greetings Lee. Hmm, i wouldn't even think to use a resource that on the surface doesn't appear to be related. I'll definitely check this out! Dorsey
