Great question! Typically a degree in business is helpful, it can help provide a foundation for possibilities outside of school and introduce you to the different parts of business. I would also say start thinking about the businesses that you frequent, how they operate what part of that operation interests you the most. For education, specifically, start looking at the offerings at universities near you see what they offer and decide if any of those topics interest you as well.

DeLana’s Answer

A good place to start is by exploring the various aspects of business to figure out what is most interesting to you. For example: marketing (i.e., sports or brand), finance (i.e., investing), strategy, or budgeting and planning.

Once 1–2 areas are identified, you can:
1. Research requirements of top schools or programs in that field (e.g., required classes, grades, test scores, activities)
2. Take helpful classes in high school, if they are available, such as business, economics, accounting, computer science, math, and writing
3. Get real life experience through a summer job, internship, volunteering
4. Learn from others by reading articles and books; and watching or listening to interviews with people who excel in those areas.

Morgan’s Answer

To enter a career in business, students should begin by learning about the different business fields they may want to explore in college, such as accounting, finance, marketing, human resources, and economics. Most business careers require a college education, so building a strong academic foundation in high school is important. Focusing on core classes like math and English helps develop essential skills in problem-solving, analysis, and communication, which are critical in all areas of business. In addition to academics, participating in extracurricular activities such as clubs, leadership roles, or student council can help prepare students for business programs by developing leadership and teamwork skills

Di’s Answer

Hi Khrisla - Usually schools will offer foundational courses in accounting, finance, marketing, HR, business management, and economics, these are great starting points. Sometimes statistics and fundamental math courses are also requirements for business. Definitely take a look at the curriculum offered and the classes that are recommended for business. You should also think about what specifically in business you are interested in, the more in depth courses will be more specific to a specific area like finance or marketing.
