How do I break into the field of marine biology?

I have always considered myself someone who is very on top of their future, but I'm at a loss. I plan to be int he field of marine biology, and I want to start building connections and gaining information about it when I am in high school. The problem is that I live in northern California, at least two hours away from the ocean, if not more. Keep in mind, I do not have my license or permit. The closest zoo to me is in Sacramento and my parents told me that I do not have time to volunteer there with my extracurriculars, which they want me to prioritize. How do I gain information and break into this industry as an adult without any place to begin now?

Angelita’s Answer

If you dream of becoming a marine biologist, start by diving into everything you can about ocean life and science. Take classes in biology, chemistry, and environmental science, and aim to get a degree in marine biology or a related field.

You can also:

- Volunteer at aquariums, zoos, or environmental groups.
- Join beach cleanups or conservation projects.
- Seek internships with marine research teams.
- Learn skills like scuba diving, data analysis, and scientific writing.

Marine biologists explore animals, plants, and ecosystems in oceans and other waters. Many spend time doing field research, collecting samples, and working to protect marine life.
