It's true that there will always be restaurants and they need cooks to cook the food for their customers. However a chef or Exceutive Chef is at the very top of the food chain so to speak. Everyone else in the kitchen are cooks, Even w/ a title of Prep Chef (chopping and dicing) cooks don't make much money or even a living wage ( $10-12/hour). My niece graduated from CIA (Culinary Institute of America), has 5 to 6 years of experience in top restaurants. She even moved out of NYC to a smaller city in the hopes to increase her salary living where there are fewer restaurants. She absolutely loves what she does, but she still needs lots of roommates to afford her rent. In the US, the wait staff (front of the house) makes the most money due to tips. In Europe, all staff are on salary and it is a much more equitable situation. The higher scale the restaurant, the higher the salary. I hope this helps.

Alexis,

Everyone has to eat! Hahahaha
Like any career they are as big as you make them. I have been a chef for a very long time and find that my industry is brilliantly consistent. It's a 799 billion dollar industry so, yes it's big!

Hi Alexis I. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

As I respond to your question in the year 2021, in a post-pandemic world, I share that culinary careers may be at the highest levels they have ever been. Agree with a previous answer that folks need to eat :D. Add to that a space where 1)people may feel more comfortable eating at home 2)farm-to-table deliver of fresh food products is no longer a specialty reserved for just a handful of folks but much more mainstream and 3)people spend lots more time on their devices watching videos. Videos on how to cook stuff, preserve stuff, serve stuff, grow stuff...you name it :)

I think that culinary careers will only continue to grow as individuals explore great dining experiences both inside and outside of their homes.

Best of luck to you!
