Just how helpful is a second language really?

Everyone knows about being a translator but this is overrated, plain and old news. What kind of interesting and worth while things are there.

Thank you comment icon Knowing two languages has actually opened up many doors for me, I am a tutor for math at my school and knowing two languages helps me communicate with more people.Trust, its really helpful. Diana
Thank you comment icon Hello Terrance! Having the ability to speak another language definitely helps you stand out from other applicants. For me, it got me into two of my dream jobs just because I spoke Cantonese. This shows that you're willing to use that second language to help other people with the language barrier in the work environment. Spanish and Mandarin are one of the most wanted languages from a person, but French, German, and many more are as important also. Joey

Solinda’s Answer

A second language can be extremely beneficial. It allows for you to interact with more clients and can make your job way easier. I took Spanish all through grade school and it's definitely come in handy now where half of the people I work with are catering to the Spanish speaking community. Plus, knowing another language is super helpful if you like to travel.

There are, as people have said, lots of practical effects. (And you really would be surprised how many different situations you might be in where someone would say, "Hey, does anyone here speak ___?", that aren't just "working as a translator".) Learning another language has a lot of other benefits, though:

  • It gives you access to books, websites, movies, and other things that will help broaden your perspective.

  • Knowing the language itself can broaden your perspective and help you look at things in new ways.

  • It will probably make you a better writer in English, because it will give you tools to think about language in general.

And, well, don't rule out the number of jobs other than translating that involve multiple languages! (Though I'll let other people with more experience in them speak up about those.)

Mounia’s Answer

Hi,
I guess a second language is as important as how global do you want your life to be, by learning a language besides your own you are opening a door to learn about a new culture and all the new ways of living, working, studying, cooking, eating and so much more from people who are different that you , it opens your eyes on the world that you live in, it honnestly breaks barriers for you to devellop, grow and thrive, you could get a global position in a big company, and one of the reason could be your second language, I would advise that you learn as many lmanguages as you can, knowing a language is knowing a new part of the world that was foreign to you a world you share with other people.

Best of luck,

Michael’s Answer

When you leave school you enter the "job market." The word market is accurate; employers look for the best-qualified person to do whatever it is they need. So, any advantage you have is a plus for finding the best, most interesting and/or highest-paying job. A second language may not be required but it certainly helps.

The short answer is: learn everything you can about everything you can. Sooner or later you'll use it.

NIRMALA’s Answer

Knowing the second language opens doors for many opportunities. Communication is the key to success. Many companies prefer their job candidate to know another language specially in the healthcare facilities because the population is very diverse and it is easier to understand the clients needs if you know another language specially Spanish. Also if you want to travel or work internationally i.e., United Nations etc. the second language is very important.
