Could a degree in business, as well as history, help me find a career in Museum work?

I am a high school senior about to go to University. I am going to major in history with the goal of pursuing museum work or teaching. As much as I love history/humanities, they are not usually easy fields to break into or very high paying. Therefore, I'm would like to major in Business Admin. as well. Business is not what I'm passionate about, but it is something reliable I can fall back on if I can't find a job in the field I want.

My question is mostly aimed to those in museum work, particularly those who are in charge of hiring: In your opinion, would a degree in both business and history stand out in a potential employee? And could the skills learned in a business degree apply to museum work in a way that would encourage potential employers to hire me?

Thanks!

A good and interesting question.

First, yes, get into a second major and, in my opinion, finance is a very employable area at the moment along with tech. History and the other Social Sciences are on a downward slope, with many colleges and universities cutting back on their offerings as the job market is drying up.

On the other hand, if you wish to teach history, that is still very possible in high schools. Most assuredly U.S. history. Other history courses offered would depend upon the school district, state regs and so forth.

One other thing I would recommend. Many museums are willing to accept volunteers. Being a gofer and doing office work. You may wish to consider that.

I think the degree combination that you are considering would be a great fit for museum work. Museums an other non-profit organizations need to manage operational, financial and strategic activities just like a business. Museums need to develop and manage funding sources such as donations, memberships and admissions. They also need to manage expenses, such as building maintenance. Managing these activities take business skills and business knowledge. Your background and studies in history will help you better connect with the mission of the museum.

In my experience, it doesn't really matter what you study (unless you want to be a doctor). You can study history and then pursue an MBA or any other course that helps you get closer to the job you dream of. In real life, the skills you pick up at work are what truly count. And remember, you can learn anything you set your mind to!
