As a Highschool student going to college soon, How does college compare to High school?
I'm curious about the workload, how you manage stress, and what the people are like. I'm majoring in Game Art and will be attending RMCAD this fall. I tend to get anxious and stressed when it comes to school, so I’m a little worried about how I’ll handle everything. #Spring25

Each student has a different experience when it comes to their workload in art college depending on what their interests are in the field. From my experience at MIAD, I found art college to be much more flexible and accommodating than high school. You can take as many classes as you can handle and you can make your assignments as detailed or as simple as you’d like. Most art professors are very accommodating in helping you create what you want to create too which can make the environment less stressful than high school as you are putting your energy into subjects that are important to you. I’d always recommend creating close relationships with your professors as they are industry professionals that have an understanding of what you are going through and can help guide you in managing your stress to create projects that are suitable to the amount of time you have in your day. As you can create in a way that allow you to make what makes you happy and meet deadlines for your art projects, you will have the time to feel rewarded by the college experience. Art college is an eye-opening experience as it allows you to understand a broader range of what being an artist is than high school has time to offer you. It is also awesome to have the opportunity to meet all different types of artists throughout your career. From my experience, meeting like-minded people who shared an interest in creating a career out of art was a heartwarming experience that made me feel more heard, seen, and capable of success as an artist than I had ever felt before. I’d highly recommend going to college. It’s such a fun time! You can do it!

Hi Emily, College is quite different from high school, but don't worry; these changes will help you grow. In college, you'll have more freedom and choices. You can set up your own schedule, pick elective courses that interest you, and learn to manage your time since no one will chase you for homework. Class sizes can vary from large lectures to small seminars, and professors will want you to join in on discussions. The best part is meeting classmates from different backgrounds and making friends in clubs, dorms, or the cafeteria. It might take a little time to get used to everything, but I believe that by the end of the semester, you'll love the college lifestyle, which lets you focus on your studies and grow as a person. Remember, every senior has been through this transition, so feel free to ask them if you have any questions.
