How can I make my resume stand out from other college students?
I am a student at Saratoga Springs High School in 12th grade, a future finance-major, and a golfer and runner. My favorite classes are economics, accounting, and gym.

As a college applicant, it's important to shine by showcasing your achievements both in and out of school. Be sure to emphasize your extracurricular activities and any successes you have had in those areas, not just academics. Employers often seek well-rounded candidates who excel in various aspects of life. You've got this!

Typically your finance resumes for entry level and coming into internships as freshmen in college will all look roughly the same for experience, structure & content. When I have got the most interviews as well as what I look for is actually not those items as they are all “standard”. What I look for and what worked best for me is the volunteering aspect and where my interests and hobbies are. People want to know if you are able to be empathetic and if you are interesting with your hobbies. Consider adding your most recent read book.

Hi Basil! To make your resume stand out from other college students, customize it for each job or internship by aligning your skills and experiences with the specific role. Focus on highlighting your achievements with clear, quantifiable results rather than just listing duties, and be sure to include any relevant internships, academic projects, or certifications that demonstrate your expertise.

If your grades are good, focus on making your Skills and Interests section stand out on your resume. Many people will have some experience like an internship or volunteering, but what really catches an interviewer's eye is something they can connect with. It's great that you enjoy the gym, golf, and running—I like those too! Be sure to list a few interests at the bottom of your resume and be specific. This is a great way to show a bit more about who you are.

Hi Basil,
I hope all is well! This is a great question! Making your resume stand out as a finance major comes down to showing more than just coursework. You want to highlight real experience, even if it’s small. This could be internships, clubs, personal finance projects, or leadership roles that show initiative and interest in the field. If you’re a golfer or runner, you can also include that, especially if you’ve competed or shown commitment, since it demonstrates discipline, time management, and consistency.
Another key factor is how tailored and intentional your resume is. Instead of listing everything, focus on experiences that connect to finance and tell a clear story about your goals, while still using activities like sports to show well-roundedness and work ethic. Consistency also matters such as building skills, gaining experience over time, and improving each version of your resume which helps you stand out more over time.
I hope this helps you on your journey. Please reach out with any other questions. Hope to talk soon!
Thank you,
Dwight

Looking for your dream college while you're in high school is a fantastic idea! Colleges usually look at your grades, so it's a good plan to do your best in classes and exams. Getting involved in sports is also a plus because colleges love to see athletic participation on applications. Being active in school activities, like joining clubs or student council, is a great move too. Also, consider what career interests you, like medicine or technology, so you can pick classes that set you up for success in the future.

In the day of people using AI, I would recommend focusing on what your keep track of at work. You should feed AI with what you did at your job and not just job responsibilities but what you accomplished and how you made an impact. Keep track of #s such as $, %, days, weeks, and use that to tell a stronger story. There will be peers just like you who also had responsibilities, the key differentiator is how you tell your IMPACT in the responsibilities using numbers. Best wishes!
