10 WAYS TO EARN SOME EXTRA CASH
To avoid being the proverbial broke college student at your school Mary, there are numerous ways to earn extra cash while in college

1.) BECOME A TUTOR
This may be an obvious option, but being a tutor is a surprisingly lucrative side-hustle. If you excel in some subject, chances are other students might need a little extra help -- and are willing to pay for it. Or, students in your area (like high school students or even other college students) might need your expertise, as well. While the actual pay or rate you can get may vary depending on the subject, type of student, or area you are tutoring, you could potentially make up to $20 bucks an hour – not bad for using your brain.

2.) APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
While you may already have a scholarship through your college or financial aid through FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), there are countless other scholarships you can apply to that may help alleviate the burden on your wallet of higher education. Smaller scholarships can range from $500 to over $1,000, depending on which you apply for, and can help you make a bit of money toward your college education. Different scholarships you can apply to range from first-generation scholarships to academic achievement scholarships.

3.) BECOME A RESIDENT ADVISOR
For years, one of the simplest ways to earn (or save) some extra money on campus has been to become a resident advisor, not only do most schools offer free or highly discounted housing, some also offer meal stipends and tuition remissions.

4.) BECOME A PROFESSOR'S ASSISTANT
If you've impressed your professor in one of their classes (or have high academic standing), you may be able to become a teacher's assistant to earn some extra cash while on campus. While the pay ranges for teacher's assistants, you can often make minimum wage or around $15 per hour. Tasks may include things like helping grade assignments and papers, doing research for your professor, or other administrative tasks for the class.

5.) BECOME A RESEARCH ASSISTANT
If you've ever been teacher's pet (or even if you just enjoy research), becoming a research assistant to one of your professors is a great way to earn a lot of money in college while still staying within the comfort of your own campus. Research assistant can include duties that range from gathering and analyzing data, labs, and organizing records to researching literature and compiling library research. And, the best part? You can typically earn between $18-$30 per hour.

6.) SELL YOUR TEXTBOOKS • https://bookscouter.com/
Instead of selling your books back at the bookstore at the end of each semester (where you’re at their mercy to accept whatever price they give you), you should consider other, higher-paying options. Let BookScouter compare book prices across 44 vendors and then choose the one that offers you the best price (much like Expedia does for flights and hotels). With no listing fees, free shipping, and the best price for your book, there is no reason to sell anywhere else.

7.) TAKE PAID SURVEYS
Paid surveys are one of the easiest ways to increase your income from home each month. There are tons of reputable sites out there that pay you to fill out surveys online. Long story short, companies want to know what consumers think, so they pay survey sites to collect the data for them. Survey sites then pass on a portion of their compensation from companies to you. By completing a few surveys a day you can easily boost your income by up to $100 a month.
• Swagbucks – Earn a free $10 bonus for signing up.
• Survey Junkie – My favorite in terms of survey diversity.
• MyPoints – Cash back for online shopping.

8.) DELIVER WITH UBER EATS PART TIME
There are a lot of good reasons to deliver with Uber Eats. Even if you only have time to do it a few hours each week, you can really make several hundred dollars a month from this most legitimate of side income ideas. On top of the extra money (which is the main reason to do it), you’ll also meet so many new people, which may lead to some unique opportunities for you that you wouldn’t have otherwise had.

9.) SELL ITEMS ON eBAY
Thanks to the miracle of online shopping, you can make bank by simply selling your items on eBay. Depending on the value and quantity of your stuff, you could be making a hundred dollars a month. And, the best part? You can do it all from the comfort of your dorm room. So if you didn't know what to do with last year's wardrobe, consider selling some of your stuff on eBay to make a little extra cash for college.

10.) FREELANCE WRITER
If you have a knack for writing, you can earn great money writing for others. Not sure how to start? Contact bloggers, who are always looking for great writing. As blogs grow, they can afford to pay freelancers good money for quality articles. Websites looking to build links also hire freelancers to write guest posts to be published on blogs and websites.

SELL PLASMA
For those who may be a bit more desperate (or daring), selling plasma is actually a very popular option for college students to make some money. In fact, you can actually make around $50 per donation, according to Business Insider. Check out DonatingPlasma.org for more details on eligibility and locations where you might be able to donate plasma and make an extra buck (plus, help someone in need).

Hi Mary,

Becoming an RA (resident advisor) during my sophomore & junior years of college was one of the best experiences I've ever had. Not only did this allow me to live rent free (with meals included!), it also provided a great opportunity to meet a ton of new people and participate in a wide range of experiences. I also learned many life skills -- accountability, integrity, compassion and flexibility to name a few. As an RA, you may also have the opportunity to stay on campus during holiday breaks and summers to earn extra cash helping out in the residential office and/or managing summer camps that take place on campus. And, best of all, it's a great resume builder to help you land your first job once you graduate.
Thank you comment icon Oh wow, I'm definitely going to look into that. I really appreciate your response. Mary

Steve’s Answer

Take a stab at being a Real Estate Agent. Take 6 courses, in Texas for example, then take your Exam and pay a few bucks to get set up in MLS and various tools and off you go. You can work for a large branded Brokerage (if you need the training) or you can work for a small online Brokerage at a low cost of entry. For example if you list (and some sells) or you sell another's listing you can make up to 3% of the sale price as a commission less any agreed Brokerage fees set by your Broker. It's fun selling and you can begin by working with friends and family.

Enjoy being your own boss.

There are part time remote positions like doing data entry or tutoring. You could also make some money by going to a blood plasma center where they will give you money for your plasma. I had some friends make ok money with that approach during their college years.

Hi Mary,

Search online for platforms where you can find "gig" work, similar to Uber, but offering more opportunities, in many fields of work, for short-term task based work. If you search Freelance Management Software, you'll discover, there are sites you can sign up for, like: www.workmarket.com to find opportunities to develop different sources of income. Good luck!!!
