About

I’m a Nurse Practitioner at Shock Trauma in Baltimore, MD, providing life-saving care to critically ill patients, often flown in from smaller hospitals in the region with fewer resources. I work independently, performing advanced procedures like central line placements, and I’m accustomed to making quick decisions under pressure. I’m part of a skilled team of nurses, physicians, PAs, and fellow NPs, all specializing in emergency critical care. Honestly, I may be one of the few people who can say, "I love my job," and truly mean it!

Emily’s Career Stories

In layperson terms, what do you actually do at work?

At work, I care for patients who are in critical condition, often coming in from accidents or severe health issues. I help stabilize them by making fast decisions and performing important medical procedures. I work closely with a team of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to give the best care possible. My job is to help people survive serious health crises, and sometimes, after weeks of treatment, they’re able to leave the hospital and return to their lives. It’s about giving patients a chance when they need it most.

What is it like when your job gets tough?

When my job gets tough, I lean heavily on my coworkers, who are more like family. We work in such a high-pressure environment that having a strong support system is essential. There are tough days when patients aren’t able to make it, and it can be emotionally draining. But my team is always there for me, whether it's to debrief, share a laugh, or just listen. I also make sure to have healthy outlets outside of work—whether it’s yoga, spending time with my daughter, or simply getting outdoors. It helps me recharge so I can continue giving my best when I'm back at work.
