Abby’s Career Stories

What is the biggest challenge you had to overcome to get to where you are now professionally? How did you overcome it?

I came out of college at a very difficult time for the economy and was unable to find work on my desired field at the time. Instead I started working a retail position and spent the next seven years in that area. It was a job that was just ok for me, and I got to the point where I felt drained everyday. I knew that it wasn't a good fit for me in the long run but I wasn't sure what to do. I was in a job by that point where I did a lot of training, coaching, and mentoring and I did love that part of my job. So I did a lot of research and figured out that training was a field I wanted to be in full time. Then I worked on figuring out how to best position myself in my resume, cover letter, and interviews to highlight the training skills I developed. I found online training resources and took some online Lynda courses to round out my skills. I asked friends to set up informational interviews with people already in the training field so I could get feedback. It was not an overnight process, I sent out a lot of applications before I started getting interviews, but I eventually landed a job as an instructional design associate and I'm thrilled to be in this field.
