#Spring26 - What skills and experiences should I focus on developing now to successfully transition from a construction inspector role into a civil engineering or project management position in the infrastructure industry??

I currently have hands-on experience working as a construction materials testing technician and inspector on roadway, utility, and airfield projects, including work at Rickenbacker International Airport. My responsibilities included materials testing (soils, CTB, concrete), QA/QC inspection, and ensuring compliance with ASTM, ACI, FAA, and DOT standards. I am currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering Technology and am interested in transitioning into a civil engineering or project management role in the infrastructure industry. I am looking for guidance on what additional skills, certifications, or experiences I should focus on to make that transition successfully.

What does it take to be a business manager?

I’m a 7th grader at Crane Middle School and I want to do business management. It’s interesting to me because I want to have my own company and do things on my own, like making plans and setting up projects. A time I planned something was when I had to schedule a babysitting meet up so I could pick up the client's child. I would love to have my own company focused on project management. I can show leadership and I am a good communicator. I usually manage the time I have to do things well. What is the most important skill I should work on now in middle school if I want to run my own project management company one day?

How realistic is it to pursue a job in theatre management and what steps should I take to do this?

I am currently a freshman in college, and I am realizing that my passions lie in the theatre world, but more so in the management side. I would love to pursue a career in theatre management whether that be a project manager for a theatre or shooting for the stars to be the artistic director of a theatre. However, I'm not sure if this is a feasible goal, or if I should be more realistic and stick to my current plan of being an English & Creative Writing: Publishing major and pursue a career in publishing. I am also curious what I should major in if I do decide to switch majors and remove my English & Creative Writing: Publishing major. I currently attend the University of Iowa, and they do have a good Business school, but I also know that Iowa is known for their Writing programs and not necessarily their Business or Theatre programs. I definitely know that whatever I do, I am keeping Theatre Arts as a second major because I have a lot of college credits from high school that allow me to do so. Should I let theatre just be my "fun thing," or can I turn this passion into a realistic career? How would I get a job after college with a reasonable salary I can sustain myself off of? How difficult is it to actually pursue a theatre management career? How long will it take for me to climb my way up to a well-paying job? Basically, my biggest question is, is it worth it/realistic?

How do I highlight the impact if it's less tangible?

I'm interested in Project Management. How do I highlight the impact when the result is less tangible and what are the things recruiters want to see from a new grad in project management. Context: I don't have leadership roles but I do led teams in academic projects but just basic development. No results actually just initiative in leading. I have no internships yet in PM.

How can aspiring leaders such as myself ensure that technology doesn't take away from the connectedness and empathy of my team when using it to communicate with one another?

Technology is a wonderful thing, but many of us have found that there is a serious lack of empathy when humans interface on the internet. In a work setting, it is important to ensure there are proper expectations set to remain professional, but in today's world, we need to determine what is the driving force that allows users to be empathetic through technology. #Spring25

What were some of the difficulties QA professionals used to face before graduating vs. nowadays How can I excel at quality assurance? #Spring25?

This goes specially in software but open to other areas. I'm currently a Junior in Computer Science and it's been a long road to get to this point, even admitting that I don't like coding that much. I've realized however that I do enjoy Quality Assurance and testing. I was wondering how professionals have overcome and even got to the point where they realized they liked QA and would like to build their career around it. #Spring25

I am planning to get into construction management and at a later point down the line, have my own company. I’m excited, but a little apprehensive as I have never started a business myself. What advice do you have for a college student who wishes to have his own construction business someday?

I am a college student who wishes to study construction management and eventually own my own company. I do not have prior experience with owning a business, and therefore, I am hoping to learn what I can do in college to help me become prepared for it. Any tips regarding skills to concentrate on, internships, or what to avoid doing would benefit me a lot.

Nonprofit/Organization, Awards, Challenges?

Hello! I am currently a freshman in high school, and my interest lay mainly in architecture and business (specifically hospitality), as I want to create my own hotel brand. In addition to this, I have always wanted to create a nonprofit, or other assisting organization that could assist domestic violence survivors, those currently in those situations, as well as homelessness. Additionally I wish to work on a couple other projects regarding my 2 interests and participate in awards/ challenges for them as well. Does anyone have any recommendations for these? Also, is it okay to work on the nonprofit/project for domestic violence and homelessness? Also, does anyone have any suggestions for that nonprofit/project?

How can I get a Project Management Job? It's really hard :(

I’m a Management fresh graduate from one of the universities in Indonesia. I’ve been searching for a job as a Project Manager for over three months now, but I haven’t had much success. Even securing an internship has been challenging due to the high requirements—most positions ask for at least one year of professional work experience as a project manager. It feels like a paradox: how am I supposed to gain experience if even getting an internship is so difficult? I’ve also tried looking for opportunities in other ASEAN countries through LinkedIn, but the results have been the same. While I may not have professional experience as a Project Manager, I do have some relevant project management experience. I interned as a business consultant, where I managed several projects, and I also worked on project management tasks during my exchange program in Malaysia. Currently, I’m taking Google’s Project Management courses on Coursera to strengthen my skills. If anyone has advice on what I can do to improve my chances of getting hired or knows of any internship/full-time opportunities for Junior Project Manager roles, I’d greatly appreciate your insights. Thank you!

Growing from Tech support role to a Development role. Choices?

Hello 4 years in technical support. 1st line, 2nd line, exposure to being teamlead. SQL, virtualization related, current role connected to z/OS monitoring product. I am considering for myself which next step to take. Variants that I am considering: 1. Java software development. 2. Automated testing. 3. AGILE/SCRUM or direction towards PM. 4. z/OS Systems Programmer, as my duties now allow me to scratch the surface of that world. I am absolutely confident in my soft skills. My bachelor and masters are social sciences and management. All what I know in IT is what I've learned through jobs and certifications in Cloud and Mainframe. My tech knowledge is always updating. But in some areas I have sufficient gaps. Please advise as to what better navigate to. Shall I pursuit Development role as more interesting and rewarding? But longer to gain competence. Shall I go into automated QA as something easier to switch to? But less interesting and less rewarding than QA Shall I build up my skills towards system programming? To went here might require dedication, meticulousness and perseverance at extreme degree. How to question myself is SCRUM/PM is my stuff? I want to get advice from proffessionals who had similar forktree choices in life. Personally I do incline more towards Java Developer. Reason why Java - code that can be run anywhere and more easier to learn.
