Steve’s Answer

I think it really depends on your interest, as @William Vvuko mentioned above, go with something you enjoy! Because if you don't, you can be earning really high-income but burn out within couple of months. I've had friends who done that, trust me, not desirable. So i hope you consider "sustainability - meaning how long do you think you can last / your passion will last" for the job, as part of your career choice.

As for my opinion, Computing seems to be the ever popular thing ever since the dotcom era. With the digitalization of everything, from government services, corporate workflows, to even healthcare. Having a fundamental of understanding of how it works technologically behind the scenes can be really helpful in navigating the future. Plus, computing science is a school of thought. a way of thinking, and that really helped me organized my life and advance my career. hope this helps you with some clarity!

Tom’s Answer

Future engineers will be crucial in supporting America's growth as industries grow and infrastructure ages. As data centers increase for cloud computing and AI, and as roads, bridges, power systems, and water networks wear out, engineers will lead the effort to rebuild and update the country's foundation. They will mix new ideas with practical solutions, designing strong systems, updating old structures, and making sure new industrial needs are met safely and effectively. This career path uses technical skills to directly support national progress, making engineers vital for keeping America's infrastructure strong for years to come. Civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers are all needed, but there aren't enough of them to meet the demand.

Teklemuz Ayenew’s Answer

When choosing a career path in engineering, it is important to consider your passion, your strengths, your long-term career goals, and the realities of the job market. You should aim for a field that not only has high income potential and strong future demand, but also matches what you enjoy and what you are naturally good at. For example, if you enjoy problem-solving and coding, fields like AI, software engineering, or cybersecurity can be excellent choices because they are in high demand and offer global opportunities. At the same time, aligning your career with your interests will make it easier to stay motivated, build expertise, and succeed in a competitive environment. Ultimately, the best choice is a balance between what you love, what you are skilled at, and what the future job market needs.

Thank you for your question.
Below are my suggestions:
1. Firstly, you need to find out what careers you have interest. Also, there are many different careers in engineering, eg mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, biochemistry engineering, etc you can find out more online and the careers you have interest
2. Find out more on these careers and determine what causes you have interest
3. Attend the information sessions hist by engineering department of colleges.
4. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counselor, your parents, etc.
5. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like pursue

Cynthia’s Answer

I am so happy to see a female interested in STEM! Currently, the top paying engineering positions are: (1) Petroleum Engineers, (2) Chemical Engineers, (3) Computer Hardware Engineers, and (4) Software Engineers. They all have 6 figure salaries, but there are plenty of engineering fields that provide very comfortable incomes. I totally understand the want for a high income, but you also have to like what you do. The key is to understand what you enjoy doing and align that with your purpose and future goals. Some fields require a lot of sacrifice, others not as much. Once you know and understand what would bring you extra joy, purpose and what your future goals are in life, you will easily be able to find a STEM position that is perfect for you.

Sandeep’s Answer

If you're aiming for a well-paying and secure job in engineering, consider focusing on exciting areas like Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, or Data Engineering. These fields are shaping the future of technology in many industries. It's a good idea to combine strong coding skills with knowledge of systems design and data or AI. This way, you can create smart and scalable solutions that are in high demand worldwide. Try to steer clear of fields that are too general or crowded, and instead pick a specialization that is unique and always growing.

Dr’s Answer

I'd definitely choose Robotics! In 10 years, I believe most people will have a home robot to help with tasks like babysitting, having meaningful conversations, and being a friend, along with the usual chores. There are big challenges ahead in this field, and it needs lots of smart engineers to solve them. While AI has advanced a lot and general intelligence might be not too far away, robots still need to improve how they move. This is a big engineering challenge. AI can now analyze symptoms and suggest health plans like a doctor, but robots still struggle with hands-on tasks that nurses do and even simpler jobs like dishwashing or walking dogs. Making robots move better is tough, even for the best companies in Robotics. They need talented people like you!

William’s Answer

Hi Niha,
I appreciate your desire to become an engineer. Engineering is a very vast field of study. Traditional branches include civil, mechanical, electrical, structural, chemical & production engineering. Others include aerospace, biomedical, software, automotive engineering as well as robotics. You therefore have plenty of fields to choose from.
Many things influence the choice of a career. The first consideration is to choose something you love & enjoy doing so you can pursue it with passion, commitment & diligence. As you may be aware, engineers provide solutions for some of the many pressing challenges humanity faces. Your choice of career can truly make a difference in people's lives - which is a very noble thing to do.
In addition, the many special gifts nature has endowed us with are, potentially, opportunities we can craft successful careers out of.
Whereas choosing a career that earns you a decent life is important, excelling in what you do, as long as it fulfills an important human need, can easily guarantee you financial freedom.
I hope you find this useful. Good luck in your choice of career.
