What minor would best aid the degree I’m pursuing, BA in Graphic Design and Media Art, considering my my career aspirations include owning a hand lettering business, creating social media content to show my process and attract customers, and also create seamless files which I can then apply to different pieces of merchandise to sell in a little shot or at different farmers markets and what-not?

If your goal is to run your own hand-lettering business and use social media to attract customers, I’d strongly recommend a Marketing minor. It directly supports what you’re trying to do--building an audience, understanding what draws people in, and turning engagement into actual sales. Knowing how to position your work, follow trends without losing your style, and read analytics is a huge advantage for creatives.
That said, marketing alone won’t cover the operational side of things. Adding some Business or Entrepreneurship coursework (even if it’s not your formal minor) would be really valuable for things like pricing your work, managing inventory, setting up an online shop, and handling markets or commissions. A lot of artists struggle not because of their work, but because they were never taught how to run the business side.
In addition, regarding the creation of seamless files for merchandise, any classes in digital media, web design, or advanced Adobe tools (especially Illustrator) would be a big plus. Being able to create clean, scalable vector files will make it much easier to apply your designs across different products without losing quality.
Overall, Marketing is probably the strongest single minor for your goals, but the most successful path is really a combination of:
- Marketing (to grow and attract customers)
- Business fundamentals (to sustain and scale your shop)
- Technical digital skills (to produce high-quality, versatile designs)
That combination sets you up not just to create great work, but to actually turn it into a successful and sustainable business.

My son has a degree in Graphic Design and even started his own LLC. He often mentions that he wishes he had studied Business Administration because managing a business can be tough on your own. He also collaborates closely with Marketing departments, so knowing that side of the business is really useful. Best of luck to you! Your entrepreneurial spirit is clear just by reaching out to this community. I'm confident you'll do great!

I would recommend Business with a Marketing Focus. Also, I would suggest doing some research to see what gaps or challenges that you would want to solve. People/Businesses are always looking to have their problems solved and will gladly pay for a valid solution.

If there are minors in AI of somewhat, take that. Also, if you can obtain a Master's you increase your growth potential because with a Master's you become eligible to teach design at mulitple grade levels.
Hope this helps,

Hey Deborah, I'd strongly recommend a minor in Marketing or Business Administration with a digital marketing focus. Since you want to own your own business, sell merchandise, and use social media to attract customers, the creative side alone won't be enough; you'll need to understand marketing strategy, branding, budgeting, and how to actually convert followers into buyers. From my own experience, studying both marketing and business analytics during my graduate studies was a game-changer because it taught me how to think about the business side of things, not just the technical craft, and that combination is what really sets you apart when you're running your own thing. A marketing minor would cover social media strategy, content marketing, consumer behavior, and e-commerce basics, which directly maps to everything you described wanting to do. If your school offers it, even a few electives in entrepreneurship or small business management would be a great bonus!
