Why can’t I get an internship?
I seem to be coming up short. I’ve been trying to get internship offers for summer and fall but there’s nothing in my area with the exception of medical scribes and volunteer opportunities. Any advice?

Internships are VERY hard to get. There is typically over hundreds of applicants that are trying to get that one internship that it can get overwhelming. Its kind of like the job market. When there is a opportunity open, especially when there has not been an open opportunity in a while, people tend to swarm at the opportunity to get it.

Hello Elizabeth:
You are stating that you cannot get and internship. My question what is your specific area of interest? I think that once you identify your specific area of interest then you will be able to find and internship. However if you are not able to find a internship, you can always volunteer. Volunteering is a good learning experience and you gain a lot of knowledge. Have you ever had a discussion with a Career Counselor who maybe could give you some options, career counselors are very resourceful. In addition you also may want to network, networking is a good way to find out what opportunities are available.

Hi Elizabeth! I ran into similar challenges when I was searching for business internships in college, and if I could go back, I’d give myself this advice:
Focus less on the company name or how glamorous the opportunity sounds, and more on the skills and experience you’ll actually gain.
If you can afford to take a volunteer role, those can be great ways to build transferable skills that look very similar to internship experience. You can also look for leadership roles through school, clubs, student organizations, or extracurriculars. What employers are usually looking for is evidence that you’ve already started building the skills they need.
I’d also recommend getting feedback on your resume, practicing your interview answers, and applying broadly. Sometimes the first offer comes from a role you didn’t expect, but it still gives you the experience you need to build momentum for the next one.

Go for the volunteer activities! While you won't get paid, you will have an opportunity to gain many skills which will be helpful in getting an internship or job in the future. There are many volunteer opportunities which are short-term, such as serving a meal to people in need, visiting someone at a living assisted facility, run errands for a neighbor, rake leaves, etc.
If you need to earn cash, ask your neighbors, friends or relatives what chores you can do for them. Keep a list of all you do for a future internship application or resume.
With every good wish and many blessings,
Karen

Try calling companies and organizations you want to learn more about. Ask if there's someone who can give you more information or if you can have an informational interview. You can email them too, but calling usually gets quicker responses.
