Jeanne’s Career Stories

In layperson terms, what do you actually do at work?

I am semi-retired and currently work part-time in sales for The Disney Store. My background in Theater and Dance has been an amazing asset in every area of employment throughout my life.

What is the most useful piece of career advice you got as a student, and who gave it to you?

A high school teacher gave me this piece of advice. Don't select a career based on how much money you might earn. Pick something about which you are passionate and love and success will follow. If you enjoy your job, you'll never do a days work.

When did you get your first Big Break? How did you get it? How did it go?

My first "break" as you call it was successfully auditioning for a theater in Ohio and landing the role of Gertie in "Oklahoma!" That job introduced me to new people and places. However, I always looked at every job opportunity as a stepping stone. Every interview, audition, job is a "big break" to something new. Every day at the same job can propel you forward if you approach your work with integrity, dedication and passion.

How did you start building your network?

I found people with a variety of talents and knowledge. Looking back, I worked with people from all walks of life, even if they weren't my own talents and interests. Keep them in your network and ask questions, engage in conversation, work on projects together.

When you were a student, did you do anything outside of school to build skills or get knowledge that has helped your career?

Theater and dance were always my passion, I took dance lessons four days per week outside of school and I was involved in any school activity that even remotely suggested performing, such as cheerleading, chorus, drama club, debate team, future teachers club, spirit club. I auditioned for local theaters and volunteered at the YWCA teaching dance to young children and became a student teacher and assistant at my dance school.

Did anyone ever oppose your career plans when you were young or push you in a direction you did not want to go?

My mother told me that when I was three years old I announced proudly to her that I was going to be a dance teacher when I grew up. As I grew, my passion never waivered. Although my parents may not have been too sure of my choices, they never opposed my decisions and encouraged my to follow my dream and helped guide me if I was drifting into dangerous territory. I knew I was loved and had their unconditional support. In turn I was able to pass that support, love and guidance onto my children when they embarked onto their career paths.
