Is working as a business hard?

A typical day in business usually includes checking emails, going to meetings, working on reports, solving problems, and helping the company run well. People often work with others and make decisions, then finish the day by planning for tomorrow.

I think the answer to your question is all a matter of perspective. I had a long career in business and loved it! I probably did everything you identified (and a bit more). I had a feeling of being productive and appreciated.

I only hope that you will enjoy every role you have in the future!

With every good wish and many blessings!

Fidel’s Answer

Hi Jason,

If you like what you do, it will be a lot less “hard”. You need to find out what you are passionate about. And then you will excel. And the hard will be easier to manage.

There is always a positive angle and read in anything which is hard to do. You are probably learning more and faster, forging a better character, building stamina, becoming more appreciative for the small “goods” and “softs”. Avoiding the hard part of business (or for that matter anything in life) is not only unrealistic but it may make it even harder. Go for it!

Wishing you every success in your business career.

Hello, Jason !

It's great that you are exploring a Business Career !

There are no typical days in Business and then again, it highly depends on the exact type of business you are speaking of. What a person does for a service or a product a person is managing can and does have a lot of variety throughout the day. It may be best to narrow down what type of Business you want to explore because no two businesses are run or operate the same. It may help you to get some hands on experience to explore Business further.

Did you know that High school students in San Francisco have access to a variety of paid business programs and internships that offer hands on experience in fields such as finance, project management, public service, and entrepreneurship ? This would be your best bet if you are exploring what Business is all about. There is Project Pull, which is an eight week summer internship for high school juniors and seniors, SF YouthWorks, is a paid internship program that places students in city government departments such as the Public Library, the Airport, or the Public Utilities Commission, the Venture Analyst Internship at 1435 Capital Management is a 10-week full-time program based in San Francisco, The Norman Mineta Bay Area Summer Academy is a five-week paid program that introduces students to regional public sector careers in public policy, infrastructure, and regional planning and the Berkeley Business Academy for Youth offers a two week residential program at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, where students work in teams to develop business vocabulary, foundational concepts, and frameworks for startups.

Those programs would be beneficial if you are seriously considering going into business and want to become familiar with different types of activity involving different types of business. There is no set way for business. It depends on too many factors to be typical or predictable. The activities you've mentioned are indeed job duties, but business can be unpredictable, spontaneous and different each day.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best exploring the wide range of business types !

Hi Jason!

Business careers get easier the longer you keep at it. Over time, you'll develop skills that you probably didn't know you had and be able to eventually move into aspects of the business that really interest you and keep you going. There will always be things that you have to do that you don't love doing, but when you find what you really enjoy doing, and specialize in that, you will find the good outweighs the bad by far.

My favorite parts about working in Business are collaborating with others to solve problems, adding value to the company by helping improve processes, training others on tools I specialize in, and finding opportunities to learn new things. I never stop learning, there is always something new to dig into (especially with technology).

I started my career thinking I wanted to go into Advertising, and I did that for a while, but I found out that I was really good at organizing and keeping track of things (and loved doing it!). That's how I moved into Website Analytics and have been working in that field ever since. I didn't go to school for that, it doesn't matter (like I said, you learn new things constantly), and I really love what I do now.

It really helps to start with a company that you admire. When you are interested in the company's overall goals, it makes it easier to find where you fit in and start contributing right away. Even if you are only starting with a small role, you can move up to bigger roles over time just by doing the best job you can and making improvements or suggestions to help not just yourself, but others in the company as well.

Best of luck to you!
