Great question. Digital marketing is obviously a very relevant career right now as more advertising moves to digital platforms like websites, social media and video streaming.

Will it be in 10 years? Maybe. Probably, actually. But, if it's not -- do not worry.

When I graduated with a degree in public relations, the career landscape for a public relations professional was much different than it is today. Journalism was different. The expectations of a public relations professional were different and much more focused on media relation than today.

As professionals, we take what we learn in college and use it in our first entry level jobs. You and your skills will continue to evolve along with your industry!

With the advancements currently being made with generative AI, Digital Marketing is likely going to be seeing some seismic shifts within the next 12-18 months. Likely sooner.

I encourage you to check out what Google and Bing are doing with AI. They will have some blog posts that share what their overall plans are.

I agree that there will be a big need for digital marketers that have knowledge in how to navigate the AI revolution.

I have been working in Marketing for 15 years, and it only seems to be more of a need in our current world, so yes! Definitely a good idea to study it, and keep up to date on the latest trends. Email marketing is a strong part of Digital Marketing that we have the most control over. Social networks like Facebook and TicTok are important but could go out of business one day, where as email is pretty much here to stay. Good luck to you!

Naomi María’s Answer

Digital marketing won't go anywhere unless a solar flare takes away all our technology in one fell electromagnetic whoosh! So don't worry about there not being enough digital advertising, content, and strategy to go around. It will continue to grow and change, and 4-6 years from now it will look different than it did 4-6 years ago. There's a lot now, ranging from SEO to the MMS ads sent to your phone to sponsored products on Amazon to social media influencer campaigns to landing pages.

What will happen in the future is there will be new channels for content and advertising and a digital marketing program will teach you strategies for all of these, but what will also be important to help find a job and stand out from the rest of crowd is getting a little professional digital marketing experience through internships, work-study, or a part-time job before you graduate.

The good thing is digital keeps getting bigger so there are many different industries you can work in. You might figure out while still in school or you while at your first job after graduating or even later than that. You will have opportunities to pivot! Even with AI coming into the picture, it's not going to displace the need for digital strategists, analysts, designers, writers, and other roles. It will simply change how people work with technology. Digital marketing changes a little bit every day, so to stay relevant in the field, you'll have to keep up with trends and pay attention to what's going on with advertising platforms, social media, streaming, e-commerce websites, and more.

I added a couple links for you to read so you can see a little bit about what digital marketing needs are today and what people think they will look like in the future. Hopefully it helps you feel more confident about the field and maybe you'll even find a niche that sounds interesting to you! :)

These roles often offer good career prospects and opportunities for advancement.

Entrepreneurship and Freelancing: If you have aspirations of starting your own business or working as a freelancer, digital marketing skills can be incredibly beneficial. However, it's important to note that digital marketing is a competitive field, and success often requires a combination of knowledge, practical experience, and creativity. Before making a decision, consider your interests, strengths, and long-term career goals. Research the curriculum and reputation of the digital marketing program you are considering to ensure it aligns with your needs.

Additionally, keep in mind that while formal education in digital marketing can provide a strong foundation, practical experience, certifications, and staying updated with industry trends through self-learning are equally important. The field of digital marketing often rewards individuals who can demonstrate their skills through real-world projects and practical application.

Ultimately, whether or not you should study digital marketing depends on your personal goals, interests, and the opportunities available in your desired career path. It can be beneficial for many individuals, but it's important to carefully evaluate your own circumstances before making a decision.
