Eric’s Career Stories

Did anyone ever oppose your career plans when you were young or push you in a direction you did not want to go?

Absolutely! My mother hated the idea of me joining the military. But being from a town so small I could hear my high school football games from my house, and having a routine of going to school and watching my 3 younger sisters made me feel stagnant and bored. College just wasn't for me at the time. I needed to do something with my life and be a part of something bigger than myself. Most importantly, I needed excitement and adventure in my boring life. As a result, I ended up joining the US Navy, but when my Recruiters picked me up to go take the ASVAB test, my mother kicked me out of my home. I was homeless for 2 weeks afterward until I found out my aunt lived 30 minutes away and took me in, and I didn't speak to my mother for 7 months. During the final month before my departure to boot camp, my mother expressed regret and sadness for allowing her fears and emotions to dictate what I wanted for myself. Since then, we managed to repair our relationship, and I am happy to say that I'm almost 13yrs in the Navy and 2 graduate degrees down, and I will be starting my doctoral in healthcare administration in May of 2024. Your future is yours. Shape it how you want it, and accept the risks and disapproval of others. Your life is not about doing things perfectly all the time; it's about you figuring it all out and making work for you so you can be content, secure, and hopefully, happy.
