Get involved in your college early by joining computer science clubs, coding groups, and participating in hackathons. Explore career fairs and apply for internships at startups to gain real-world experience, while also preparing for technical interviews by practicing coding problems and strengthening your understanding of data structures and algorithms. Develop soft skills such as clear communication, teamwork, adaptability, and problem-solving, since companies like Apple value collaboration as much as technical ability, and take advantage of opportunities like the Swift Student Challenge to gain visibility.
To strengthen your profile, specialize in high-impact areas such as iOS development, systems engineering, machine learning and AI, or cybersecurity. Contribute to open-source projects, maintain a strong GitHub or portfolio, and network with peers, alumni, and engineers while keeping strong performance in core CS courses. Build system design thinking and product sense through polished, user-focused projects, and consistently seek feedback on your work and interviews while staying disciplined over time. Overall, building strong projects, actively participating in extracurricular activities, and networking with professionals will significantly enhance your skills and greatly improve your future career opportunities.

Great question. I recommend you look into internships in the tech field and gain as much work experience as possible while in college. It may also behoove you to seek out volunteer experience with organizations focused on getting young people into the technology field. Examples include: NPower, Per Scholas, and Merit America, Best Buy Foundation (Teen Tech Centers), Develop for Good, Black Girls CODE, The Clubhouse Network, TechForce Foundation, Out for Undergrad (O4U), and Hack4Impact.
