Lake G.’s Career Stories

How did you pick your career? Did you know all along?

When I was in high school, I was focused on natural sciences and hadn’t really considered a career in accounting. Everything changed after I passed my high school exams. A friend of mine had a brother who was an accountant, and after talking with him and learning about his experiences, both my friend and I started to think differently about our futures. With his advice, we decided to switch from natural sciences to social sciences. My friend eventually became a doctor in Economics, while I discovered a real interest in accounting. I pursued an undergraduate degree in accounting, which gave me a solid foundation in the field. After university, I decided to become a certified accountant through the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants). The process required dedication and hard work, but it was rewarding to achieve that professional milestone. As my career progressed, I became interested in how technology is changing the finance world. This led me to shift slightly toward SAP Finance, where I could combine my accounting expertise with new technology skills. Even now, my accounting background remains essential in my daily work. Currently, I am adding artificial intelligence (AI) knowledge to my skill set to adapt to the latest shifts in the industry. I believe it’s important to always be a fast learner and to be willing to change as new opportunities and technologies emerge. Looking back, I didn’t always know I would become an accountant. My path changed because I was open to advice, willing to adapt, and curious about new opportunities. My journey taught me the importance of being flexible, learning continuously, and thinking about how future trends—like technology and AI—can shape your career. My advice: Don’t worry if you don’t have everything figured out right now. Stay open to new ideas, reflect on your strengths, and be ready to adapt as you learn more about yourself and the world of work. The ability to learn quickly and embrace change will always serve you well.
