Marisa’s Career Stories
In layperson terms, what do you actually do at work?
I help students and graduate prepare for the workforce. I help with resume writing, interview prep and developing soft skills. I also network and reach out to employers to help my students find job opportunities.
When you were a student, did you do anything outside of school to build skills or get knowledge that has helped your career?
I worked! I have had a job since I was 15. Being able to find a balance between school work, work and life is important. Working outside of school helped me understand I need a balance. It also helped me with time management and understanding my commitment.
What is the most useful piece of career advice you got as a student, and who gave it to you?
I don't know if I had career advice while I was in school, that's part of the reason why I love what I do now. Since working, I have had amazing mentors to help me develop my skills throughout my career. And I still look up to them and lean on them when I need help.
What is the one piece of career advice you wish someone gave you when you were younger?
To take more risks when I was younger and not to be afraid of change. For example, if I was open to relocating when I was younger I would have been promoted sooner. I've lived in several different states now and I have grown professionally and personally from every new adventure.
How did you pick your career? Did you know all along?
I didn't pick this career, I fortunately fell into it. I always knew I wanted to work with people and help them but I wasn't sure how. When I first started working in Career Services at a college, I fell in love with this field. I have a passion for this field and I love how it keeps changing and getting better over time.
