Lisa’s Career Stories
In layperson terms, what do you actually do at work?
I am a critical care transport nurse. I work for a large academic teaching hospital. Sometimes patients are in a hospital that does not provide the treatment they need. Their Doctor calls our hospital to arrange a transfer. When all of the background things are done, I go with a patamedic and an EMT, to the other hospital to bring the patient to my facility.
What is the most useful piece of career advice you got as a student, and who gave it to you?
The best piece of advice I have ever received was "Treat the janitor, like you would treat the CEO." A nursing school professor told me that you should treat everyone the same. I make it a point to do that, and a persons status has nothing to do with providing compassionate care to them.
What is the one piece of career advice you wish someone gave you when you were younger?
Never say anything negative about coworkers in public. You never know who may hear you, and who they may know. So...just don't say anything at all.
