Nicholas’ Career Stories
When you were a student, did you do anything outside of school to build skills or get knowledge that has helped your career?
I began working part time to gain skills in a field I was passionate about, I wanted to gain more social and interpersonal skills. I gained a strong foothold in customer service, and found a strong urge to become better in who I am and push myself out of my comfort zone. The only way to get better at your career is to set goals for each job, use the job as a stepping stone to gain the needed skills you want to embody. Skill building is done out in the world and not sitting on a phone, go out and get those skills!
What is the one piece of career advice you wish someone gave you when you were younger?
Don't take a job just because it pays well, it's a terrible mindset to be in, find a career where you know your skills will be of good use and that they are paid for in equal to who you are. I declined and left multiple decent paying jobs because of the workplace climate, the way I felt going to and from work, and who I was surrounded with while there. Follow your gut when need be, it'll be of great use.
What is the most useful piece of career advice you got as a student, and who gave it to you?
Work hard, you will never get where you want by giving bare minimum work. A former manager at my first job, she kicked me into gear and motivated me by tearing into my actions while at the job.
