Alexis’ Career Stories

When you were a student, did you do anything outside of school to build skills or get knowledge that has helped your career?

I did competive mock trials for 8 years (high school and undergrad). I played a variety of experts which really cemented my want to be a forensic pathologist. A big part of forensics is public speaking due to court testimony. Mock trials help get your feet wet, build valuable public speaking skills, and provide connections in the legal world.

How did you pick your career? Did you know all along?

I was 10 years old when I told my mom I wanted to "cut up dead people". Since then I've just pursued forensic pathology as best I can. The biggest advice I can give is volunteer! The only way you'll know you like a career field is if you try it. I saw my first autopsy at 18 and completely freaked out. It took some time, but I know this is the field for me. Also, don't be afraid to fail. The sciences are difficult and the subject matter is going to test you, but if this is really your passion you'll give it your all.

Did anyone ever oppose your career plans when you were young or push you in a direction you did not want to go?

As a woman in the sciences especially a science that deals with the dead I can't tell you how many people have questioned me. However, there was an equal number of people (cops, family, and friends) who were just as encouraging. At the end of the day no matter what someone thinks pursue the career that makes you happy. I love dead people so I'm going to be a medical examiner. It's as simple as that.

What is the one piece of career advice you wish someone gave you when you were younger?

Have a plan for med school applications before you graduate undergrad, don't be afraid to fail, volunteer more, and go out once in a while and have fun.
