Hi, my name is Shayla. I am a 23-year-old Philadelphia native and a graduate of Penn State University, where I majored in Communications, specifically Media Studies, and minored in Human Resources. I am still job hunting, but in my free time, I've achieved certifications related to my fields, freelanced as a brand ambassador and I have a blog relating to my interests in media. I would like to start answering any questions you guys might have on Career Village. While I might not be the most experienced person you can talk to, I like to think I am relatable, supportive, and can offer some tips!!!

Did anyone ever oppose your career plans when you were young or push you in a direction you did not want to go?
This is a question that is often raised by the needs of our parents, other family members, or even friends. I cannot count the number of times my parents have frowned, either with disagreement or discomfort, at my career choices growing up and even now. They would say things like, "why can't you pick a profession with a straightforward path", "what exactly are you doing with your degree", or "your friend is pursuing a great career, you should be like them". These are all examples of just the many ways people who love and support you can behave when they don't understand that you are on your own journey. My advice is to keep pushing through with what you enjoy and want to do. At the end of the day, it is your career, accomplishments, and dreams that no one can take away from you.
