About

I have been in the nursing profession for about three decades. I have worked in many specialty areas and now I am enjoying one of my favorites, nursing education.

Barry Eugene’s Career Stories

When you were a student, did you do anything outside of school to build skills or get knowledge that has helped your career?

I volunteered at a local hospital to become more familiar with the health care environment. Later I started working as a nursing assistant to solidify my foundational nursing skills.

When did you get your first Big Break? How did you get it? How did it go?

I received my first nursing job offer as a new graduate on the unit where I final completed my final nursing clinical rotation. The nurse manager became familiar with my work ethic and performance. I was unaware that I was being observed by her while I was a student nurse. She revealed this information during my job interview. This took place during a time where nursing jobs were not plentiful for new graduates in the hospital setting. I received my first job prior to obtaining my nursing license (this was permissible in the early 1980’s).
